Last winter, Nintendo’s 3D television service “Itsu no Ma ni Terebi” launched in Japan. It featured short two-minute 3D clips that were free and exclusive to the 3DS. Today, Nintendo announced that the service is ending in Japan on June 20. The 3DS, however, will continue intermittent distribution of 3D videos for 3DS owners — a good thing.
Retail video game listings are a tricky business. Sometimes they can be trusted, but most of the time they’re full of speculative nonsense — particularly when it comes to pricing. At a recent investor Q & A, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata spoke quite frankly about the issues Nintendo is currently struggling with, freely admitting that Nintendo didn’t make enough effort to retain its core gaming audience. Imagine doing a ‘number 2′ in this Mario themed toilet. The things I would do, I would make the ‘going down a pipe’ noise upon release and when I flush. Actually that’s the only ‘cool’ thing I can imagine doing. I’ll just leave now.
The Nintendo 64 had some good games. You know that. It’s a fact of the universe, built right into its physical constants. Einstein and such. So, by the laws that govern our very existence, this high-def tribute to Star Fox 64 (and the series in general) is also good. Not regular good, but italicised good, which is always, always better.
The way that licensed products are remixed and reworked in China is endlessly fascinating. Thanks to lax laws (laws that are increasingly less lax), Chinese businesses can get away with things they never could in other countries.
More news from last night’s Nintendo Direct announcement event: While Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 are DS games, playable via the 3DS’ backwards compatibility, there will be some apps released (in Japan, as of now) to enhance the 3DS experience.
