THQ will release Obsidian’s upcoming South Park RPG in 2013, it said during its earnings conference call today. It was previously slated for 2012.
This Saturday, at PAX East, I had the pleasure of attending the “Plot vs Play” panel, moderated by Joystiq’s Ben Gilbert and Kotaku‘s own Jason Schreier. The panel brought together three developers who have all worked on landmark, story-driven games to discuss their differing philosophies on the presence and purpose of story in gaming.
If Brian Fargo’s Kickstarter-funded project reaches $US2.1 million, it will be co-developed by Chris Avellone and the team behind games like Fallout: New Vegas and Alpha Protocol.
Obsidian has let go approximately 20-30 people, Joystiq reports. Kotaku has also heard from multiple sources about the layoffs, which affect both an unannounced project and the developer’s upcoming South Park RPG. [Joystiq]
From what we’ve heard of the upcoming South Park RPG, it’s in good hands. From what we can now see of it in action, that feeling remains unchanged.
