Is Realistic PC Pinball Worth $US300?

2:40AM Mike Fahey | Now I’ve stated in the past that I am one of the world’s biggest fans of video game pinball, from both a height and width and level of devotion standpoint, but I’m just not sure if I am ready for Nanotech Entertainment’s Pinball Wizard Controller. Sure it features real flipper buttons, a real plunger, and the ability to detect motion for realistic table nudging action, but there is no way in hell I could ever justify spending $US299 on a controller just to play pinball. An actual pinball table, perhaps, but not a controller, no matter how appealing the thought of having a real plunger may be. More »

Logitech Unveils $US250 Guitar Hero Controller

12:20AM Mike Fahey | Looking for something to spend lots of money on for the Guitar Hero fan in your life this holiday season? Look no further than the newly announced Premiere Edition Wireless Controller for Guitar Hero from Logitech. Featuring a wooden neck, rosewood fingerboard, metal frets, metal tuning pegs, and the new touch-sensitive neck slider, this is the end-all, be-all of guitar controllers. The buttons even use Logitech’s rubber dome keyboard technology for quieter action. All this, and it’s wireless. I think I am in love. Is it $US250 worth of love? I suppose I’ll find out once temptation hits retail this December. Hit the link for the gallery More »

Mad Catz Rock Band Fender Bass – The Best Rock Band Bass

10:00AM Mike Fahey | I’ve been pretty excited about the Mad Catz Fender Rock Band Bass since it was first announced, though my cultivated distrust of the quality of Mad Catz products made me bit wary of the product. It took a heartfelt assurance of the guitar’s quality from Mad Catz’s Global PR & Comms Manager Alex Verrey to convince me to give it a go, and I have to say I’m pretty glad I did. I can honestly say that this is the best damn replica bass guitar for Rock Band, and only part of me is poking fun at it being one of the only ones available. More »

Ace Combat 6 Flightstick Bundle Triumpantly Returns

12:20AM Mike Fahey | I got into Ace Combat 6 for the Xbox 360 far too late to get in on the hot, flightstick bundle action, and I’ve been regretting it for months now, especially considering the prices a used model of the special controller have been going for on eBay. Well these guys are going to feel awfully silly now as Namco Bandai announces the return of the Ace Combat 6 Flightstick bundle! Available exclusively at Best Buy, the pack comes complete with Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation, the Hori Ace-Edge flightstick, a custom Xbox 360 faceplate, and a copy of the award-winning aerial combat documentary Speed & Angels. The total package retails for $US149.99. More »

SteelSeries’ WoW Mouse Isn’t Screwing Around

6:20AM Mike Fahey | SteelSeries doesn’t screw around when it comes to making computer gaming peripherals. At BlizzCon 2008 this past weekend they unveiled a World of Warcraft branded gaming mouse that could very well be the most feature-packed pointing device I’ve ever laid my hands on. The World of Warcraft MMO Gaming Mouse packs an impressive 15 fully programmable buttons across its stylish surface, which can be modified to glow in any of 16 million colours with varying intensities. The software for the device is styled after the WoW interface, allowing for up to 10 different profiles for your different characters, even importing your character information directly from the WoW Armory to make things all convenient-like. Mad Catz – Give Us A Chance And We’ll Change Your Mind

4:00AM Mike Fahey | The folks at Mad Catz are very much aware of the fact that gamers view their company’s product and third party accessories in general as cheap, low quality knock offs. I myself haven’t been too keen on their products for quite some time, a fact that I mentioned in my story about the Mad Catz Fender Bass for Rock Band. Well Mad Catz’s Global PR & Comms Manager Alex Verrey dropped me a line yesterday with a message for all of us: Mad Catz has come a long way – just give us a chance to prove it. Using Rock Band as an example, Alex hammers home his point. Rock Band range is a prime example. Take the Fender Bass: We proudly display a sticker on the packaging informing customers that the Strum Bar has been quality tested to 2.5 million cycles (That’s 1.5 million more than official!)…If you still doubt the quality, how about this: Mad Catz will be the ONLY SHOW IN TOWN making the OFFICIAL Cymbal Packs for the Rock Band 2 Drum Kit, no one else will be making them, just us! With a product and a range this important, do you think Harmonix would let us go ahead if they had any doubts at all on the quality?

Mad Catz Ships Fender Rock Band Bass

3:40AM Mike Fahey | It’s here, it’s here! It’s finally here! Well, it’ll shortly be here at least. Mad Catz has announced that the first in their line of third-party Rock Band instrument alternatives is shipping today, and bassists of the world rejoice. The Fender Precision Bass guitar is an extremely sexy piece of fake guitar-shaped plastic, featuring all the standard guitar features, including solo keys, overdrive mode, and a unique whammy feature integrated into the volume control to give the bass an authentic feel. Probably the best feature of the Fender Precision is the split strum bar, which allows for two-finger plucking in classic bass style. The only way they could capture the bass experience any better would be to include someone to (severely edited) the bassist in between sets. I crave this like I have craved no other plastic musical instrument before, to the point where I’m completely bypassing my own built-in safeguards against buying Mad Catz products and actively considering making the purchase. Scary, I know! More »
