Um, The NES Did Not Feature Counter-Strike Humping

An article on Hungary’s MSN portal about teen sexuality uses an interesting image to illustrate its point. And by interesting I mean amazing.

Kotaku ‘Shop Contest: Work Stoppage Winners

Last week’s challenge: Imagine a world in which negotiations broke down and video game performers went on strike. Video game characters of the world unite! You’ve got nothing to lose but your pixels.

artisttheone (4) kicked off the unsafe conditions theme with a pissed off Super Meat Boy. AcidCrownie (2) continued it with the obligatory Asshole Dog entry, and thanks for that. Packetloss (15), gives us the obligatory Bad Dudes entry, and thanks for that.

GamerKT (11) and simply_androoo (18) gave us games with some key characters present, others missing. I guess Snake’s not union? OctaneHugo’s joke is funny if you remember the 1987 NFL players’ strike. Bouchart (5)and liniert99 (13) support real miners with virtual ones.

My favorites: A tie between AgentRayBans (3) and RandMan612 (16). Congratulations everyone, we’ll see you in here tomorrow.

Kotaku ‘Shop Contest: Master System Cover Winners

The Master System/Mega Drive debuted before the advent of home desktop publishing, so the design choices of its ridiculously minimalist covers seemed somewhat sophisticated at the time. We gave modern games a retrofit in last week’s ‘Shop Contest.

Kotaku ‘Shop Contest: Politics As Usual Winners

Tuesday’s elections in the United States provided the grist for our two-week shop contest, imagining, examing and implementing political motives in video games and their characters. We’ve rounded up the 20 best in this gallery. E pluribus funny!

No, This Is Not Confirmation Of The ‘Wii 2′

Some of you might have noticed that in the latest edition of Nintendo Power, which is someone holding a Wiimote labelled “Wii 2.” We contacted the editor and was told it was a straight goof-up, not a surprise leak.

Andrew Ryan Was Time’s Person Of The Year? Who Knew?

Poor old BioShock didn’t get GOTY love from those who call Kotaku Tower their home, but the game’s disembodied presence Andrew Ryan was Time’s Person of the Year in 1969. That is, according to Something Awful’s recent Photoshop Phriday that called for a suitable replacement following Vladimir Putin taking the 2007 “honour.” The real winner of Time’s POTY were “Middle Americans.” A handful of other video game characters also “won” in the contest’s other entries, the kind of folks who are generally associated with this year’s “best of” awards. The water damage on the cover is a nice touch, but an era appropriate Time cover would have been even better.

BioShock Propaganda Goes to the Grocery Store

Sometimes you see a Photoshop fake that is SO good you just wish it was real. Such is the case with this genius and extremely well executed pic from SomethingAwful. Having just re-played through the first few hours of BioShock again in an effort to show my friend how beautiful the game is, I got to see the whole Andrew Ryan speech on Rapture over again. It always made me laugh with its little slideshow presentation and self aggrandising rhetoric. So I had a good laugh over this little image that a friend of mine emailed me and thought I would share it with other BioShock fans. I don’t care how crappy or far away the store was, if they had this on their shopping carts I would find an excuse to shop there every day.

New Playstation Store, Ala Photoshop

Kotaku AU

Either this guy is incredibly passionate about his PS Store experience… or he has way too much time on his hands.

Way too much.

Whatever you believe, a user by the name of “cruzader” on PS3Forums spent at least a couple of hours ignoring his chores and doing Sony’s work for it, by designing a new PS Store in Photoshop.

Visit the thread, see what you think. Personally, it’s not something I’d use. But then, I don’t use the current PS Store (and probably never will).

Update: Sigh… do people go looking for this stuff? It seems as though someone interpreted my last comment as an insult against Sony. Which it wasn’t. I don’t use Xbox Live, or any online console service for that matter. It’s not that I don’t like them, or have some irrational hate of Microsoft or Sony, I just don’t have any need for them. I’m sure they’re great.
