So, How Long Do Sony And Microsoft's Approvals Processes Take?

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 2:30 PM on November 8, 2008

You'll see it mentioned all the time when talk of game delays or patches comes up. "Oh, we're just waiting on the approvals process", or "we're just waiting for the patch to be certified, then we're good to go". Those kind of excuses/explanations sound great from the developers end, but to us? It's meaningless, because we have no idea how long those processes take. Or, we didn't. We have at least some idea now, thanks to the always-helpful "Ask Capcom" letters section the company runs every week.

Short Films Come To PS3, PSP

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 7:30 PM on November 5, 2008

SCEE are working on a little project called Shoot! It's a project that will see six short films - five from Europeans, one from a Canadian - offered as free downloads on both the PS3 and PSP. Each film is the result of a partnership between an existing, well-known director and an up-and-coming kid, and as such features short films like The Dreaming, which saw Jerry Bruckheimer "mentor" Salt of the Earth director Anthony Green. The six films will be ready for download from the PlayStation Store on November 13.

No More European PSN Delays?

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 9:30 PM on October 27, 2008

The European PlayStation Store is a bit of a mess. Europeans will know what I'm talking about. Rarely does a demo or PSN title arrive in Europe at the same time as it does in the US and Canada; indeed, it can be weeks and sometimes even months before games like Echocrome make it to the old world. It's something that makes Europeans unhappy. And is something that may be a thing of the past. At the Casual Connect get-together last week in Kiev, Sony's George Bain revealed that the company have revised their online content approvals process. Where previously stuff like PSN titles had to be submitted to each region separately - ie you had to get it approved by SCEA, SCEE and Sony Japan - the company now have a centralised approvals process. Whether that actually makes a difference or not, we'll have to wait and see, but it's certainly a step in the right direction.

'PLAYSTATION' Is Now 'PlayStation'

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 9:20 PM on October 15, 2008

Fact: The official way to write PS3 is not PlayStation 3, but PLAYSTATION 3. It's true! As game blog PS3 Fanboy noticed, the latest firmware update changed the all caps "PLAYSTATION Store" and "PLAYSTATION Network" to "PlayStation Store" and "PlayStation Network". Not sure if this means the PLAYSTATION 3 is now the PlayStation 3, though.

Digging Into Spelunker HD For PlayStation 3

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 2:40 AM on October 14, 2008

One of the fourteen "unannounced" titles that Sony had on display at this year's Tokyo Game Show was Minna de Spelunker, a modern day remake of the 1985 NES platformer Spelunker for the PlayStation Network. Irem hasn't strayed far from the original, adding only high-definition graphics and up to four-person multiplayer. One can still play with an original 8-bit graphics setting, which was on display at Sony's and Irem's booth, even in split-screen modes. The HD version, while it looks technically better, plays identical to its retro counterpart (i.e. painfully).

See The PS3 Bluetooth Headset In Hot Moving Picture Action

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 6:30 PM on September 11, 2008

Sure, we've seen plenty of pics of the PS3's bluetooth headset before, but they were lacking context! Scale! The thing could be as big as your finger, or it could be as big as your leg. Lucky we've got this trailer (and it's wonderfully cheesy corporate-metal soundtrack) to set us straight!

This Merv Griffin Created Game Show Hits PlayStation Network Tomorrow

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 7:40 AM on September 11, 2008

What is Jeopardy!? Sony Online Entertainment will be bringing the classic answer and question game show to North American PlayStation 3 owners tomorrow, September 11, bringing with it 2,500 clues, online multiplayer with voice chat and, as you can see, some rather creepy character customisation. There's no mention of an appearance from Alex Trebek or his moustache, but there is talk of expansion packs planned for 2009.

The game features multiple choice question-answers, not text input or voice recognition, something that will likely turn off Jeopardy! purists. Plans for its game show compatriot, Wheel of Fortune, also appear to be in the works.

Fracture Demo Hits Next Week

Posted by Brian Crecente at 2:00 AM on September 11, 2008

A demo for upcoming LucasArts sci-fi shooter will hit the Playstation Network and Xbox Live Marketplace on Sept. 18, LucasArts announced today.

The demo will allow players to mess around with the game's terrain deformation, the key gameplay mechanic that separates Fracture from all of those other shooters flooding the market.

Fracture is set in the year 2161 in a U.S. that has been split in two by years of environmental neglect. The country's warring factions, the Atlantic Alliance and Pacifican States, fight it out using terrain shifting tech and lots of guns.

The demo will let you use terrain deformation to create cover in shoot-outs and solve puzzles.
