Sony Australia Looks Back On 2008, Seems Pleased

10:30AM David Wildgoose | We’ve heard from Nintendo and Microsoft in our look back on the year that was. And they both claimed to be pleased. But how about Sony and the PlayStation 3? Pleased, that’s the answer, according to Sony Australia’s Rebecca Rice. She also thinks next year looks exciting with the pledge we’ll see the streaming TV of PlayTV and streaming music videos of Vidzone launch locally, plus games like Killzone 2, Haevy Rain and flOwer. Here’s How PlayTV Works

8:30PM Luke Plunkett | European? Here’s how PlayTV – the television set-top box and recorder for the PlayStation 3 – actually works. Right down to tracking down to the important stuff, like chimps and the football highlights. American? Here’s how it’d work if you were actually getting PlayTV. But you have TiVo, so you don’t really need it. More »

Sony’s PlayTV Weighed, Measured, Found Adequate

6:00AM Mike Fahey | Should Americans be upset at the fact that won’t be seeing Sony’s PlayTV device in the states, or are they better off with the DVR options they already have available to them? CVG takes a good hard look at the PlayTV peripheral, walking us through the install and going over some of the more pertinent features of the device. Aside from the ability to watch recorded shows remotely via your PSP, it seems to just be your standard DVR with a few serious limitations. Not being able to choose a show and just have it record it regardless of time slot for instance, instead having to rely on pre-set timers to capture whatever the channel you select might be broadcasting. For the £69.99 price tag the feature set doesn’t seem too shabby, but I don’t think North Americans need to be shedding any tears over missing out on the peripheral. No Format Shifting For PlayTV

10:20AM Kotaku US Edition | US-based PS3 owners who were annoyed that Sony’s PlayTV TV recorder won’t be coming to NTSC-land can cheer up a bit. Sony has decided to redress the balance by making the PlayTV rubbish. When we first heard about the PlayTV’s ability to record TV while you played it sounded great and the decision to allow ‘format shifting’ of recordings to other devices was a real sea-change for the usually clenched Sony. Sadly, it is back to tense-buttocked business as usual. Sony has announced that PlayTV owners will now only be able to stream recordings to a PSP using Remote Play. No reason, just because, although the usual concerns about intellectual property and loss of advertising revenue will doubtless be trotted out at some point. Britain, Your PS3s Will Stream TV As Of September 10 (Everyone Else, Little Later)

11:00PM Luke Plunkett | Europe’s PlayTV service for the PS3 is looking very nice. We already knew SCEE were looking at a release window of around September, but yesterday Sony’s David Reeves started handing out actual dates and actual info. The UK will be the first country to get PlayTV, with it due to start up on September 10, with a staggered roll-out across Europe in the weeks after. As a bonus treat, he also confirmed that you’ll be able to record TV onto your HDD at the same time you’re playing a game, with the necessary code having been quietly slipped into the 2.41 update. Oh, and before anyone not up to speed on PlayTV asks, no, there are no plans to bring it to the US. PlayTV dated, will record TV while gaming [Eurogamer] More »

PlayTV Hits Europe & Australia In September

11:20PM Luke Plunkett | Looks like those SCE Australia reports were spot-on. At yesterday’s SCEE event in London, Sony announced that PlayTV – Sony Europe’s HDTV tuner & recorder for the PS3 – would be launching in Europe sometime in September, for the price of €99/£80. No idea how well this kind of thing will do at market (it’s an awful lot of money considering it’s skimming off your PS3’s HDD), but as someone yet to fork out for a HD tuner for my own TV, I’ll be keeping an eye on it later this year regardless. SCEE Plays Up Social Gaming At Gamer’s Day 08

3:20AM Kotaku US Edition | At Sony Europe’s Gamers Day event, the company took care to emphasise the “social gaming” angle it’s pursuing. The company focused on “games where players of all ages socialise through gaming,” pointing out EyeToy products, puzzle titles and Buzz!: Quiz TV, where groups can play trivia games on a variety of topics over PlayStation Network. The overall message seems to highlight the PS3’s diversity as an entertainment device, with the aim of appealing to an all-ages audience. Full release follows the jump: More »
