R-Type Tactics Sequel Has A Bittersweet Subtitle

5:40AM Michael McWhertor | Atlus brought Irem’s R-Type Tactics to North American PSPs last year as R-Type Command, a turn-based strategic deviation from the side-scrolling shoot ‘em up the series is known for. A sequel is planned, with an amazing subtitle. More »

R-Type Tactics Aiming For Retrogaming Market

10:30AM Kotaku US Edition | MCV is reporting that Rising Star are attempting to target R-Type Tactics squarely at the retro gaming crowd. Tactics is a new spin on the R-Type franchise, swapping the familiar side-scrolling twitch gameplay for a resolutely older-than-old-skool turn-based hex ‘em up. “The sense of nostalgia you get when you see the artwork and knowing you grew up with this series is immense and great fun to work on”., said Rising Star’s Yen Hau, “Considering the size of the fan base, we expect to see steady sales throughout the Christmas period and into the New Year.” I have to say, this does sound like they are boxing themselves in a bit – is there really a big enough market for this? If it’s a fun game then it is a fun game, but if you have to go out of your way to stress the nostalgia element.. it doesn’t bode well. R-Type Tactics is out on September 12th. R-Type Tactics Officially Coming Stateside In May

8:40AM Michael McWhertor | Atlus USA made it official today—R-Type Command (née R-Type Tactics) will be coming to North American PSPs on May 6. The Japanese shooter series makes its first foray into the world of turn-based strategy, bringing with it multiplayer action via Ad Hoc wireless that will let you play as the Bydo for the first time. Neat. R-Type Command is, indeed, unfortunately saddled with a higher-end PSP price at $US 39.99, which will probably further limit its acceptance beyond ultra-hardcore R-Type fans. More details, if you’re not turned off by the whole thing, right after this. More »

R-Type Tactics Coming Stateside?

1:31PM Michael McWhertor | According to a historically reliable NeoGAF member, one who has access to Gamestop’s list of upcoming software releases, Irem’s R-Type Tactics is coming to North America courtesy of publisher Atlus. Rebranded R-Type Command, the game is said to be scheduled for a March 4, 2008 release date at an MSRP of $US 39.99. The game eschews the lightning fast reflexes needed to avoid enemy fire from Bido adversaries, instead offering up turn-based, hex-based strategic gameplay. You won’t control just one ship, but a fleet of space craft. We’re waiting to hear back from Atlus on the matter to see if this rumour turns out to be true. R-Type Tactics (PSP) coming to the U.S.! R-Type Tactics Hands-On Impressions

4:00PM Luke Plunkett | I didn’t even know R-Type Tactics was being shown here, so (literally) bumping into it was a nice surprise. Even nicer was the fact that nobody was playing it, so I went ahead and gave it some of my precious time. First impression was that my inability to read Japanese was going to hurt: the game’s got a billion menu screens, none of which are in English, which meant ten of my 25 minutes with the thing were spent fumbling through the menus. Once I finally got there though, it’s… what you’d expect! It’s a hex, turn-based strategy game, where you’re controlling an entire fleet (capital ships, the works) instead of just one. A basic, old-fashioned game, then, but it does look nice, and as a fan of older PC titles like Panzer General it’s great seeing the genre alive and kicking. Might be worth a look-in for R-Type fanboys, but probably more of an investment for strategy fans. More »
