The latest Interplay game to make the leap to Nintendo’s WiiWare service is MDK2, BioWare’s shooter from the year 2000, joining other WiiWare-bound re-releases like Clayfighter and Descent. But that’s not all Interplay and developer Beamdog have in store. More »
Final Fantasy XIII releases in less than three weeks, but people still can’t stop pining for Final Fantasy VII, released XIII years ago. But Yoshinori Kitase, answering hypothetically, said a remake by modern standards might take XIV years to make. More »
Back in the good old days of home microcomputing, the only way to play some Super Mario Bros was on a console. Then in 1987, Time Warp Productions created Great Giana Sisters…
It is no secret that Stardock are big fans of Star Control – Galactic Civilisations certainly owes something to Star Control II, as does the Stardock-published Sins of a Solar Empire. No great surprise then that Stardock has announced that it is actively pursuing the keys to the Star Control kingdom with a view to making a ‘proper’ sequel and glossing over the rather underwhelming Star Control III.
That PC remake of Metroid 2 that so impressed Luke back in March has reached the demo stage!
Prepare to qualify! Namco Networks, the mobile game development and publishing arm of good old Namco Bandai has futzed around with a classic racing title and dropped it on the iPhone for a whole new generation (read: market) of gamers to enjoy. Pole Position: Remix takes the primitive gameplay of the original Pole Position, tacks on some rather nifty new controls, and charges you $9.99 for the privilege of playing it.
“Pole Position: Remix is a fun and intuitive game that anyone can take for a spin,” says Scott Rubin, senior vice president, Namco Networks. “Similar to playing a racing game in an arcade, Pole Position: Remix makes you feel as if you are actually getting behind the wheel and racing on the track, screeching around turns and breaking to avoid a crash.”
In a fit of nostalgia I downloaded the game this morning. It’s solid, and the controls are fun, both the tilt steering and the on-screen thumb-controlled steering wheel options. It’s just the gameplay really hasn’t aged all that well. I need some sort of nostalgia alarm that locks my wallet when the feeling hits. If you just can’t resist, PP:Remix is now available at an Apple Apps Store near you.
Get me Valve on the phone. Tell Lombardi that the Portal prequel dev team can go home – their services are no longer required.
And yes, that Portal fan mod can sling its hook too. The Commodore 64 remake ‘Shotgate’ has rendered both games utterly pointless.
Yes, it’s a Portal clone for the C64. No, it’s not in 3D and – yes – it does look quite like that Flash tribute from last year.
This little fella was made in just 4K of C64 assembler for the Mini Games Comp 2008. If you like the look of it, the programmer is actually selling it in C64 cartridge form in a limited edition run of 20. Buy now to avoid/ensure disappointment.

The fan made, high definition update of Sonic 2 for the Sega Genesis — or Mega Drive, if that’s your speed — has reached a milestone. Sonic 2 HD, announced in the Spring, is now playable. A public (and very limited) tech demo has been released, showcasing the work the open source team has done over the past months.
Be warned, though. To experience Sonic the Hedgehog in FULL HD (1280 x 960 resolution), you might need a beefy PC. Recommended system requirements list a 2.4 GHz processor, 2 GB of RAM and a 512 MB graphics card. Not particularly outlandish, but not something you might be able to run on your mom’s laptop.
***Tech Demo Release!*** [Sonic Retro Forums - thanks, Jack! ]
Remember Alien Breed? It was an Amiga classic, later rolling up on the (DOS) PC. If you are unfamiliar, think Gauntlet, with a heavy dose of Aliens – space Marines battling wave after wave of slavering death, the usual deal.
Well, remember it or no – it’s coming back. Team 17 have confirmed to Videogaming247 that they are working on a remake for release next year.
Quite how it will distinguish itself from all the other space-marine-battling-wave-after.. etc, games that have arrived since the early 90s — not to mention the officially licensed Aliens games — remains to be seen. It was fun at the time though, so maybe Team 17 still have a bit of the old magic left down the back of the action gaming sofa.
