Alas, poor RF Online, we hardly knew ye. The official website for Codemasters’ sci-fi fantasy RPG RF Online has announced that the game will no longer be a going concern in North America and Europe as of the 9th of November. It is with much sadness that today we announce our intention to close the European and North American RF Online game servers operated by Codemasters. Our licence for RF Online is due to expire shortly and unfortunately, despite several weeks of negotiations with CCR, the Korean developers of the title, we have not been able to reach an agreement to renew the contract.
Codemasters’ Connect ’08 event at the Omega Sektor in Birmingham England is coming March 14th and 15th, and they’ve lined up some truly amazing freebies for visitors to their MMO showcase. Probably the coolest item is for RF Online players. They’ve had Masamune Shirow of Ghost in the Shell fame create a suit of armour for every class in the game, and my god are they beautiful. The suit above is for a female Cora Warrior, and the rest are just as cool! Lord of the Rings Online players who attend will get a special in-game title for their character, while Archlord players will get some exclusive armor. All attendees will also get a Jumpgate Evolution pack complete with a beta key! I was invited to go myself, but seeing as I am moving on the 15th there’s not a chance in hell…and I want some Shirow armor dammit! You go look at the pretty armor while I go cry.

Back in mid October, Codemasters announced that their sci-fi anime-styled MMORPG RF Online was switching from a subscription service to a free-to-play business model, and gamers have responded in droves. From empty servers to overfilled in a period of weeks, today Codemasters announces the opening of their second new server in the span of fourteen days. Turns out gamers really enjoy free things. Who’d have thought? Hell, even I went back and played for a couple of days before the fact that I don’t have time to play any more MMO games kicked in. And so another Codemasters MMO gets so ‘popular’ that it makes the switch to free to play! High-fantasy Archlord is now joined by anime sci-fi RF Online in CM’s stable of free MMORPGs. Personally I enjoyed the look and atmosphere of RF Online when I played it during late beta, but felt that the gameplay itself fell flat. Maybe it’ll play better free? More »
