To celebrate the slightly delayed release of Max Payne 3, Microsoft’s rolling out virtual threads and accessories that pay homage to Rockstar’s modern noir franchise.

It’s never easy taking over an IP from somebody else. Especially when that IP is so iconic. Luckily, Rockstar Games is the sort of company who rises to a challenge and rarely lets us down. Although Max Payne has been in development for what seems like an eternity now, the closer we finally get to launch, the better and better it looks.
It’s long been a subject of fan speculation as to how much Rockstar Games changed Grand Theft Auto III in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. In the decade-plus since GTA III came out, rumours have abounded: cut sequences where planes hit buildings, a supposedly removed pair of Twin Towers-style skyscrapers and the erasure of children and school buses.

Other than the ability to absorb enough human misery to fell any three lesser men and not get addicted to all those painkillers he guzzles, Max Payne has no superpowers to speak of. When Rockstar’s hard-boiled hero cop needs to dispatch bad guys, he needs guns. Lots of ‘em.
Lots of people loved Jimmy Hopkins, the squinty-eyed protagonist of Rockstar’s Bully. The academic open-world title didn’t set the kinds of records that a Grand Theft Auto game does but it’s remained a favourite in the hearts of many gamers.
