4:30AM Mike Fahey | The Sci Fi Channel has given producers Granada America and World Cyber Games the green light to produce a new competitive gaming television series, tentatively titled GameQuest. The 8 episode series will bring together 12 gamers, who will compete in a variety of elimination events including both video games and game-themed physical challenges for the title of “best all-around gamer”, with a prize of $100,000 and trips to World Cyber Games events up for grabs. “With two out of every three American households playing video games, it’s clear that this mainstream phenomenon is a perfect arena for the channel’s agenda of broadening the brand while celebrating imagination,” Sci Fi channel president Dave Howe said. 1:20AM Mike Fahey | Imagine playing a massively multiplayer online game where the actions of you and your friends help shape the storyline of an ongoing television series. That’s exactly what the Sci Fi Channel has planned for 2010, as they work with game developer Trion World Network to create the ultimate merging of the TV and gaming mediums. “A television show that is on once a week isn’t enough. The fans today want the experience to go beyond that,” Howe said. “For example, we can tell them that there will be an alien invasion at a certain place in the game, at a certain time, and to be there with all their friends and be ready. The outcome depends on them. And then that battle will be part of the universe in the show.” More »
Sci Fi Takes On Mass Effect Tonight
12:55PM Michael McWhertor | The Sci Fi Channel’s special on Bioware’s Mass Effect is airing tonight, giving fence-sitters an extra-half hour’s worth of information—and, no doubt, glowing praise—on the space epic. The special is definitely airing at 11 PM in both the EST and PST time zones, but folks in every region should check their local listings for specific times. The reason?
