Pretty Boys: The Male Dandy in Games

Posted by Maggie Greene at 2:30 AM on November 3, 2008

There's an interesting essay over at the Vorpal Bunny Ranch (a blog worth visiting for the name alone) on the issue of the dandy in video games, a character known for a few different things: 'his impeccable sense of fashion, his wit, and his distaste for rough physical activity.' They're also exceedingly untrustworthy, giving rise to an interesting stereotype of 'the dandy' as crafty (and with suspect morals) or an outright villain (e.g., Kefka):

Japanese Woman Jailed After Killing Virtual Husband

Posted by Mike Fahey at 2:40 AM on October 24, 2008

A 43-year-old Japanese piano teacher found herself in jail after viciously murdering her ex-husband...in MapleStory. According to reports, the woman's virtual, big-headed anime husband suddenly divorced her in mid-May, which lead to her logging on with the 33-year-old man's username and password and deleting his character. When the man discovered the death of his character, he called the police. The alleged virtual murderer has now been jailed for suspicion of illegally accessing a computer and manipulating electronic data, which could carry a five-year prison sentence or a fine of up to $US5,000.

"I was suddenly divorced, without a word of warning. That made me so angry," the official quoted her as telling investigators and admitting the allegations.

The Grand Theft Auto 'Sex Beast'

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 10:40 PM on September 10, 2008

And here we go. That's 19 year-old Ryan Chinnery. He stands accused to committing two sex attacks, which were supposedly inspired by Grand Theft Auto. According to British tabloid The Sun, Chinnery drove the streets looking to attack women he thought were prostitutes. None of the women he attacked were. A DNA sample found on his latest victim matched his, but Chinnery apparently claimed he was at home playing video games until he broke down and confessed. Says the case's prosecutor:

There may be some connection with the defendant admitting spending a lot of time playing that game.

A copy of GTA (not specified) was found at Chinnery's residence by police. Before you jump to conclusions about this story, jump to conclusions about this "exclusive" being from The Sun.

Diablo III to be Gender Neutral

Posted by Kotaku US Edition at 8:20 AM on August 12, 2008

Diablo II was a fun play, but you sometimes got the feeling that you were being pushed into gender roles. I mean, if a young woman wants to dual-wield a sword and a battleaxe in a fur bikini then, by the gods she should be able to become a barbarian.

Likewise, if a chap wants to master the power of sorcery then that chap shouldn't feel as though wearing a revealing dress is his only option.

Good news, then, that Blizzard has decided to move the Diablo franchise into the 21st century and make any Diablo III character class playable by either sex. Granted, it just means doubling the number of character models but it is stiill a nice gesture towards sort-of-realism.

For my money, though, it doesn't go far enough. Where are all the transgendered Necromancers? Don't oppress us, Blizzard!

Chances of Having Sex Gaming Graph...

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 10:40 PM on August 4, 2008

The above graph was made by some dude (NOT ME) to show a correlation between the hours he spent playing video games and the chances of him having sex with his wife. As you can see, playing video games over an hour causes this fellow's odds of getting some to nosedive south. And more than two hours causes those same odds to hit near impossible.

But, as game blog Hawty McBloggy points out, maybe this guy's chances look more like this:

CNN Tackles Hot Spore Porn Issue

Posted by Mike Fahey at 1:40 AM on August 1, 2008

We had our fun with lewd and lascivious Spore creatures when the Creature Creator first hit, and then we were done, but some people just can't let go and move on. The plague of Spornography has become so widespread that even the folks at CNN can no longer turn a blind eye. At least they keep things classy.

But scrolling through the database — past the three-legged sea horse, past the seven-eyed wildebeest and the half-motorcycle-half-pig — revealed something many users didn't expect. Buried among the more wholesome attempts were two-legged dancing testicles, a "giant breast monster" and a four-legged, "phallic fornication machine", for starters.

You can almost hear the concerned-sounding voice of your nightly news anchor during a commercial teasing a full investigative report on how Spore is raping our children's minds.

The CNN report covers all of the angles. First the get the word from the Spore development team.
