Being that I’m drenched in the sweet, tenderising juices of 3DS hype, I almost forgot that EA’s sequel to ‘quite alright, actually’ racer Need for Speed SHIFT is being released this week. That may end up being more than a little unfair, since it’s shaping up to be quite the potential speedster – especially if its soundtracks is anything to go by.
Here’s Shift 2: Unleashed being played at PAX East on three extremely large television screens, shot by our man there, Stephen Totilo.
Despite realistic racers not really being my thing, I remember being very impressed by the original Need for Speed SHIFT. Now that the brand is working to create its own unique vision outside of Need for Speed, Slightly Mad Studios is really stretching the boundaries of realism within the racing-sim sub-genre with SHIFT 2 Unleashed.
The first step in creating a new Need for Speed game is making sure the screenshots look amazing. Slightly Mad Studios nails it with these screens for Shift 2 Unleashed.
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit comes out tomorrow in Australia, which is why we’ve found it so surprising that info on SHIFT 2 UNLEASHED has started leaking all over the web. But then it hit us, the ‘Need for Speed’ moniker is curiously absent from this sequel. It seems that, much like Modern Warfare before it, EA isnow concentrating on allowing SHIFT its own space and brand within a brand, which we think is a good thing.
This new trailer is also a good thing.

Electronic Arts today let us know that the next Need For Speed, the one following today’s release of Hot Pursuit, will hit in the spring of 2011.
