Japanese Siren Home Space Creeps Westward

PlayStation Home is in the middle of one of their biggest content updates ever, and the North American release of the Japanese Siren: Blood Curse space plays a major part.

It’s a big week for PlayStation Home. They’re giving away Patapon 2 t-shirts on Thursday; they’re adding a living room stage set perfect for machinima; and now they’ve brought the chilling Siren 2: Blood Curse home space over from Japan. The Siren space consists of three areas. A run-down circus serves as your entry point into the space, from which you can move to the Ward of Despair mini-game lobby, with the third section being the game itself.

The Ward of Despair is a mini-game for up to five players, set in the Saiga Hospital stage from the downloadable PlayStation Network game. each given a task to complete within five minutes. If all players manage to complete their tasks without being taken out by zombies they receive creepy costumes as a reward.

You’ll want to score these rewards before May 12th, which is when the Siren: Horror Bowl Tournament takes place. Players who show up to the event in their Siren costumes will qualify for a chance to win the first four episodes of the PSN game.

Note that the Siren: Blood Curse space is only coming to North America at the moment, with a European release planned somewhere down the line.

The PlayStation Blog post announcing all of this new content also hints at upcoming Tekken 6 costumes and Killzone 2 t-shirts to stand around in.

I’m really glad to see so much happening in Home these days. I don’t think they’ve come close to tapping its full potential yet, but Sony is definitely making headway.

Slew of Home Updates On the Way

A patch, some clothes and Watchmen-themed costumes are out for Home this week. Street Fighter, SOCOM, Uncharted and Siren stuff is on the way.

The patch fixes a problem with Game Launching, which caused crashes when you opened the list of game sessions available and then tried to launch one. Most of the clothes are generic items — both free and for-purchase — but there are two complete Watchmen-themed outfits and some black-and-white shirts to celebrate the film’s release next week. Sounds like not all of them are up yet, so keep checking back.

Beyond that, we have some game-themed content to look forward to:

Street Fighter IV
The unlockable items are already available in Home and are rewarded for winning online matches in the game.
Purchasable outfits will be available within a few weeks.

Home Square
A slightly updated Home Square will arrive in early March, possibly as early as the 5th.

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune Space
This is currently being worked on and we hope to release this for you within a few weeks

SOCOM: CONFRONTATION Space
This Space is also nearly ready but a specific date for its release is not yet available, but we are expecting it within a few weeks.

Siren: Blood Curse & Resident Evil 5, Warhawk
Content for all of these have arrived here and are being prepared for SCEE’s audience now. We will bring you more information on these as it becomes available.

Game Launching
Many titles are preparing support for Game Launching but this often requires a patch to their title. It is not our intention to be announcing new releases and patches to other titles here in the Home community but hope to bring you news in the coming weeks.

Music within Home
Playing your own music to others within Home is an extremely complex licensing issue that will take time to solve, if it is at all possible.
In the meantime we are investigating various ways of allowing you to play your own music to yourself. We are also talking to other 3rd parties about making their music available to you in various ways.

Having seen an early version of the Uncharted space in Home’s beta, I think I’m looking forward to it the most. The Watchmen clothes might also be cool, but I’m still out of sorts over the $20 price tag confirmation for End is Nigh PSN and Xbox Live. (The remedy? This webcomic.)

Home’s New Siren Lounge: A Great Place To Cabbage Patch

Sony’s giving Japanese PlayStation 3 owners a place to chill—a PlayStation Home “lounge” dedicated to the horror game Siren. Looks like a lovely place to have a Home dance party!

According to my shaky translation of the Sony Computer Entertainment Japan announcement, the Siren lounge will feature title-appropriate mini-games, including a hospital that your Home Avatar must escape from. Hopefully, that means dance-offs with the hospital’s zombie-like staff.

Looks like this one’s Japan-only for now.

Still No Plans For A Siren Blu-Ray Rlease In The US

Hope this story from last week didn’t get your hopes up. Turns out that information – about a Blu-Ray release for Siren: Blood Curse in the Fall – was for European eyes only. You Americans, you’re still in limbo, left only with the option of downloading the game and these helpful words from SCEA:

At this time, there is no Blu-ray Disc version planned for the North American market. Please note, however, that you are able to delete and then re-download episodes since the purchase is linked to your PSN account. The developers kept this functionality in mind knowing that the episodes were fairly beefy.

Hah. “No plans”. Already, our favourite catchphrase of 2008! Of course, being a PS3 game it’s not too hard to import it, so long as you don’t mind the characters telling you to stick to the footpath, mind the grey-skinned chaps and use only aluminium weapons. Side note to publishers: more press statements need the word “beefy”.

A 60 GB PlayStation 3 seems like a massive beast, until you download the entire Siren: Blood Curse saga, which devours a good 66% of your hard drive, and what about those poor 20 GB PS3 owners? For those of you not wanting to turn your console into a dedicated Siren machine, Sony has plans to release all 12 episodes on a single Blu-ray disc this fall, with extra bells and whistles to make the full release attractive even to those who’ve already played through the survival horror title. Nothing on pricing as of yet, but I could certainly see it following PSN pricing for the full game at $US 39.99.

US PlayStation Store Update: Siren And Summer Sales

The PlayStation store has updated today, bringing with it the survival horror creepiness of Siren: Blood Curse, as well as bargains as far as the eye can see! The big news is of course Siren, a Blu-ray-sized game cut up into bite-sized chunks for easy consumption. There are twelve chapters of the game in all, sold in sets of four for $US 14.99, or in one big, money-saving $US 39.00 package. Siren is joined by Capcom’s 1942: Joint Strike, priced at a more modest $US 9.99.

In addition to the new games, some older titles are going on sale. For one week only, purchase PAIN, PixelJunk Monsters, High Velocity Bowling, High Stakes on the Vegas Strip: Poker Edition, or Rocketmen: Axis of Evil for only $US 4.99.

Topping it all off is a PixelJunk Eden demo, Guitar Hero and Rock Band DLC, and a fine assortment of themes, videos, and wallpapers, including entries in each category for Capcom’s Street Fighter IV. Definitely a good week to own a PS3!

Siren: Blood Curse Dated

Scary time! On July 24, Siren: Blood Curuse drops. The reworking on the original PS2 horror title will also be available via PlayStation Store and Blu-ray disc. According to website Eurogamer, Blood Curse will also be broken up into four downloadable chapters, each with three episodes per chapter for PSN downloads.

How To Get Siren: Blood Curse On Blu-Ray

The third game in the Siren series – Blood Curse – will be coming in two flavours. In Japan, you’ll be able to get it on Blu-Ray. But in the US? It’s being released as episodic, downloadable content, presumably in order to test the waters, see if there’s really a market for the game in the US. Fine for Sony, but what if you’re less a single-issue buyer, more a trade paperback kinda guy? Here’s what you do: import the Asian edition of the game, which also comes on a Blu-Ray disc. Like most Asian edition’s, it contains an English-language option, so you’ll have it all on one disc and be able to understand the thing. Win win!

In case the screenshots of Sony’s Siren: Blood Curse episodic horror adventure didn’t sell you on the game, here’s a trailer for the game, which wound up making the hairs on the back of my neck stand up just a little bit, especially the chanting at the end. Chanting is one of those things that is damn spooky when placed in the correct setting. That and spooky little girls. And baby carriages.
