New Soldier of Fortune Gorefest Looks Much Better

Soldier of Fortune without blood and flying limbs? I don’t think so. Turns out that vid we posted last week was an old, tame, marketing pitch for the upcoming game. Hit the jump if you’re at least 18 and want to check out the full-on, limb-flying, blood-spewing version of SoF we all know and love.

PS. Still not thrilled with the graphics, but this seems way better than the other.

Solider of Fortune: Payback

newVideoPlayer("sofpayback_gawker.flv", 475, 376); I guess this is the ultimate proof that Soldier of Fortune: Payback is coming. Too bad it’s going to be a craptastic value game. Man, that really sucks.

Wow, Soldier Of Fortune Payback IS Real

Yesterday, Crecente had a bad case of the “can’t believes”. After seeing an awful-looking promo poster for a new Soldier of Fortune, he couldn’t believe Activision would rush something so shoddy to market in such a short space of time. Couldn’t happen. Shouldn’t happen. Thing is, it is! Kotaku Australia’s Logan has pinged us to let us know that yes, the game is real, and was quietly announced at Activision’s recent Activate Asia 2007 promo show. Why the lack of fanfare? It’s a budget game, being launched under the Activision Value label, and won’t feature either Raven Software or the series’ GHOUL body-separating tech. Sad. Soldier of Fortune 3 Ad Hits EB Games?

Call me jaded (again) but I just can’t believe this poster is really hanging up somewhere at an EB Games. Nothing against the kind tipster who sent us the images, but there is no way that Soldier of Fortune 3: Payback is going to launch in November, landing exactly at ground zero of one of the most game-heavy months in history with little to no fanfare. And, keep in mind that Activision remains totally mum on the subject.

I think this is either a fan’s wishful thinking as seen through the eyes of Photoshop or a poster that was sent out way too early to retailers and then quickly pulled when news of the game’s… delay?, was secretly spread.

Or is it? Our tipster points out that numerous EB Games have signage and that he snagged this shot from a story that received their poster today. Is it possible for a company to launch a game with no fanfare in this day and age?

Editor’s note: I can vouch for the fact that SoF: Payback (note that it’s not called “Soldier of Fortune 3″) will be launching in November. Unless Activision lied to us at Activate Asia this year. You can read all the details in my write-up. And I’m not surprised that SoF: Payback isn’t getting a lot of fanfare – it’s being made by Activision Value! Maybe the mothership should start reading Kotaku Australia. ;)

Soldier Of Fortune: Payback Details

Kotaku AU

I was wringing dry the last drops of Activate Asia 2007 coverage from my notepad, and came across the childish scrawlings I took of Soldier of Fortune: Payback.

The details were presented to us by Steve Williams, Global Brand Manager for Activision Minneapolis – otherwise known as Activision Value – and given alongside such video game classics as Dancing With The Stars and Big Game Hunter.

Firstly, Raven, the developer of the previous two games, is not involved. Despite this, Williams said they will be bringing back the gib-enhancing GHOUL technology… it just won’t be GHOUL. He didn’t even say GHOUL. Just gibs.

There was also the promise of multiple paths through the story, which will revolve around the player’s work for a merc group called “The Shop”. To top this off, over 40 real world weapons have been replicated and implemented in-game, and 16-player multiplayer included.

Activision provided November 21st as the day Xbox 360, PS3 and PC owners will be able to snap SoF: Payback up. If you want to, that is.
