NHL 2K9's Punk-Heavy Soundtrack

Posted by Mike Fahey at 1:40 AM on September 13, 2008

Can you judge a sport by the music that video game publisher puts on their game's soundtrack? I haven't really paid attention to ice hockey since the glory days of the Sega Genesis, so I couldn't tell you much about the sport, but NHL 2K9 definitely reflects my taste in music. There's some Pennywise in there, and The Ramones, and hey, Bad Religion and The Offspring! It's like a Crazy Taxi reunion! Perhaps the reason I have trouble getting into sports games is I'm trying to get into the wrong sports, or perhaps I'm reading too much into this soundtrack press release. Does the music match the sport? Hit the jump for the full listing, which might be light on tunes with only fourteen songs, but makes up for it with sheer quality.

EA Game Soundtracks As DLC?

Posted by Leigh Alexander at 10:20 AM on July 10, 2008

Downloadable music has made music-specific games, like Rock Band, essentially self-renewing, as new tracks to play are popping up all the time. But when MTV Multiplayer's Stephen Totilo talked to EA music guru Steve Schnur (we talked to him, too), he asked him when we'll see the ability to change up the soundtracks of other games with DLC.

"You're going to see it in 2009," he said. He said that by "Madden '10" gamers can expect some of the "broader-based" EA games (not just any music titles) to be able to "continually recommend" new music that can be downloaded to enhance a soundtrack.

That makes connected video gaming sound kind of like iTunes, huh? But I'll ask you guys the same question Totilo asks: would you pay for that? What's it worth to you?

EA Reveals, Hypes Madden 09 Soundtrack

Posted by Mike Fahey at 5:00 AM on July 9, 2008

EA has revealed the soundtrack listing for Madden NFL 09, the most important series in the history of video game soundtracks. Is that right? Did Madden usher in a new age of music in video games? EA's Worldwide Executive of Music and Marketing Steve Schnur seems to think so.

"Madden NFL revolutionised the industry by making music of multiple genres - from both established acts and brand-new artists - an essential emotional component of the videogame experience and the NFL season itself... Not only have we changed the gaming culture forever, we continue to move the needle musically for millions of people around the world. Madden NFL will always be recognised as the game that made the music matter in videogames."

So what's on this most important of soundtracks? Disturbed, Franz Ferdinand, The All-American Rejects, The Offspring, Busta Rhymes with Linkin Park..the usual suspects really. Expect EA to make a huge deal out of them though, with viral videos, a special issue of Billboard magazine, and beginning the week of August 4th they'll be a different Madden artist performing each night on a "popular late night show". Hit the jump for more details, along with the full 26-song track listing.

Rockstar Games and Future Green Entertainment announced a new album from The Evil Genius DJ Green Lantern, titled "Liberty City Invasion: Music from and Inspired by Grand Theft Auto IV".

The eight GTA-exclusive tracks DJ Green Lantern wrote for Liberty City's "The Beat" radio show, which he hosts, will be on the album, along with eight new songs inspired by the game. The Rockstar team has somewhat of a reputation for its particularity when it comes to musical selections for the game, and executive producer Sam Houser said he's excited about this album and its "true New York flavor." "Liberty City Invasion: Music from and Inspired by Grand Theft Auto IV" will be available digitally on May 20th, to be followed by a physical disc launch at an unspecified date.

The Video Game Music Jukebox

Posted by Owen Good at 6:00 AM on May 12, 2008

This site is full of win: Game Music Jukebox. You should really give this a look. More than 120 video game soundtracks. Double Dragon. Marathon. Mass Effect. Hitman: Blood Money. Lots of stuff from 8-bit synth to full symphony scores. And not just the title track, but the full score, broken out by tracks.

Maybe not everything, but definitely a lot and certainly something to tickle your nostalgia fancy. Looks like they update it, too, last one was April 29.

I'm listening to the Metroid Theme now, Brinstar to be exact. IMHO, best score for an 8-bit game ever. I want to make it into a ringtone, I just need to pick the right refrain.

Just saw this on Reddit so, the buffering might be a little slow on some of the larger tracks as people go to it.

Fallout 3 Grabs Big-Name Composer For Soundtrack

Posted by Kotaku US Edition at 5:40 AM on May 8, 2008

Bethesda Softworks' upcoming Fallout 3 will feature an original soundtrack from composer Inon Zur, the company announced today. Who's Zur? He's done a number of orchestral soundtracks for games, TV and film, notably Crysis, EverQuest II: Rise of Kunark, Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts and Naruto: Rise of a Ninja to name a few.

Nothing like ominous orchestral tunes to help you get your atmospheric post-apocalypse on, right?

Burnout Paradise Soundtrack Revealed

Posted by Mike Fahey at 2:00 AM on December 19, 2007

deesnideryay.jpgEA is known for their strong and varied game soundtracks, but lately their song lists have made me scratch my head and wonder if I even qualify to write about music anymore, what with all the bands I haven't recognised. Not so with Burnout Paradise, which features at least 10 tracks I could sing for you (badly) right now, including the Guns N' Roses masterpiece, Paradise City - which was really a no brainer considering that's where the game takes place.

Other artists I recognise include Adam and the Ants, Faith No More, Alice in Chains, Jimmy Eat World, and Twisted Sister with I Wanna Rock, which pretty much guaranteed EA $US 60 of my hard-earned monies. Hit the jump for the full track list while I load up my iPod and drive my broken blue Nissan Sentra dangerously down the highway shouting Dee Snider vocals at the top of my lungs.

NFL Tour Soundtrack

Posted by Brian Crecente at 10:34 AM on November 28, 2007

youngdre.jpgNFL Tour may not hit stores until January 8, but the soundtrack for the game is due to hit EA Trax tomorrow and it looks like a pretty eclectic mix.

The soundtrack, which will be previewable on the Trax site or buyable on iTunes includes a song from Young Dre, who I'm told is most likely to break out later this year.

Hit the jump for the full soundtrack list.

Mass Effect Soundtrack On Sale Tomorrw

Posted by Mark Wilson at 5:40 AM on November 20, 2007

51f3dnQXWmL._SS500_.jpgWhile some of you may be excited to play Mass Effect, others of you will be too poor or not own Xbox 360s. For you we have a consolation prize. It's called salt in the wound the Mass Effect Soundtrack. Featuring over an hour of music from the original score, Jack Wall (Myst IV, Sam Hulick (Maximo), Richard Jacques (The Club, Jet Set Radio) and David Kates (Battlestar Galactica) all teamed up to produce a soundtrack modeled after Blade Runner and Dune. We're not the types to blast soundtracks on our nonexistent commute to work, but there's no question that the game's music is incredible. It'll be just about everywhere tomorrow for the price of a standard album.
