Movie Spyro Looking Rather Impressive

Spyro the Dragon is looking a bit more powerful than we remember him in the upcoming animated feature The Legend of Spyro 3D.

A Spyro fansite (believe it or not) unearthed the teaser poster for the film at the official website of film sales company Velvet Octopus, showing a large, confident-looking version of everyone’s favourite little purple dragon. The film, which we’ve been telling you about since 2007, found a producer last year in the form of Ash R. Shah, who signed a five-picture deal with Velvet Octopus that included the CGI Spyro feature.

The teaser poster is very bare, with no information other than that the movie exists. The DarkSpyro fan site has the film listed for a December 2009 release, but as far as I can see that’s nowhere near official. As far as stars go, the IMDB entry for the film lists Elijah Wood as Spyro and Gary Oldman as Ignitus, but again, nothing official on that front.

So basically, we have an official teaser image, which you can see below. Enjoy it, as it could wind up being the only good thing about the movie.

While the Spyro the Dragon series has been steadily declining in quality since the original was released, one thing the developers have never skimped on is voice talent. Just look at the cast for the upcoming game The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon. You’ve got Christina Ricci, Elijah Wood, Wayne Brady, Gary Oldman, and Mark Hamil – all amazing voice talents. In other words, you’ve got the makings of an amazing CGI movie, which according to Variety is in the works.

Velvet Octopus has a five-pic deal with producer Ash Shah, which includes two more 3-D projects, both CGI animated — “Outback,” the story of a white koala bear, and “The Legend of Spyro,” a spin-off from the best-selling video game.

Of course there are no details whatsoever other than the fact that a deal is in place, but if they can secure even a few of the series’ top-notch voice actors I’d be glad to hand over my hard-earned monies for a couple of hours of purple dragon goodness.

Someone Thinks A Spyro Movie Is A Good Idea

There are many gaming mascots who deserve a kid’s movie adaptation. Ratchet & Clank, for example. Those adorable Raving Rabbids. Shit, even Bubsy could probably scrape together 87 minutes of passable children’s entertainment. But Spyro? We have our doubts. But what do we know. The Animation Picture Company have picked up the rights to Sierra’s character, with plans to make a “stereoscopic 3-D computer-animated feature”. As for the plot:

The story follows Spyro, a rare purple dragon of prophecy, on a voyage of self-discovery as he struggles to come to terms with his potential while finding himself embroiled in an epic struggle against evil.

No director or producer on-board yet, but Steve and Daniel Altiere (naught but the unreleased Dr. Dolittle 4 on their records) will be writing up the screenplay based on the three games. Can’t wait.
