Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 5:00 PM on September 19, 2008

Star Trek Online looks great and all, but is it customizable? Is it, is it? Developer Cryptic answers away: It's possible to customise character uniforms as well as your Bridge Officers' race, gender, appearance and name — typical Cryptic stuff. Also possible to modify your ship. Click through the link below for more details.

Do You Have Questions About Star Trek Online?

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 4:00 PM on August 26, 2008

Developer Cryptic has answers. In the first round of Star Trek Online developer Q&As, lead designer Al "Captain Geko" Rivera, executive producer Craig "Zinc" Zinkievich, and their nicknames answer probing questions. For example: How much of the game will stick to the canon? Captain Geko answers:

Every series and movie is considered canon, and we are staying very true to this in our development. Star Trek is rich with lore and history, and there is a great deal of material to build upon as we move into the 25th century with Star Trek Online. We are working with CBS to ensure that everything we create is true to Trek and makes sense. We know that fans want to play Star Trek Online because they want to explore the Star Trek universe, and we are striving to deliver as authentic an experience as possible. Our team has seen all the shows and movies and we're watching them again every single day. We are also studying other soft canon resources such as novels and comics. From those, we are looking for inspiration and references to further enhance our game. Where it makes sense, we will include some soft canon elements in Star Trek Online as well.
More questions and answers over at the official site. No more nicknames, though.

Cryptic Reveals More Trek Online Details Via FAQ

Posted by Kotaku US Edition at 8:20 AM on August 13, 2008

Clearly, when Star Trek Online was announced, it was going to be a tough sell to the really die-hard fans.

No matter how accurately those Type II phasers were modelled, someone was always going to point out that the comms badges were slightly out of proportion or that the Bolians' skin is more of a duck-egg blue rather than the tourquoise the idiot developers went for.

To try and clear up some of the fans questions on issues as diverse as Pricing, PvP and Travel Times, Cryptic has released a comprehensive FAQ for the game.

Hit the jump for a selection of Q's that have been A'd F.

You know, even for a casual fan, this Star Trek Online trailer pushes all of the right buttons. "Space, the final frontier ..". The opening notes. The old school sound effects. The new school vessels. And finally, the inimitable pan to the warp-out sequence. It's easy to imagine throngs standing to applaud at multiple intervals at today's unveiling of the game -- with Spock on hand -- in Las Vegas. Well done, Cryptic. Engage.

Cryptic Exec: What's In/Not In Star Trek Online

Posted by Owen Good at 6:00 AM on August 10, 2008

Cryptic flacked its upcoming gameplay debut (and webcast) to the Associated Press, and the wire was a taker. Yesterday, the AP moved an interview with Jack Emmert, Cryptic's chief creative officer, and he gives gamers an idea of what to expect, what not to expect, and a little of how the deal went down when they acquired the title from Perpetual Entertainment.

Or, well, the licence, because there is nothing developed by Perpetual that's going into the game. "We took no assets", Emmert said. "There was nothing to be had, to be honest. We're building everything from the ground up".

Emmert also assures us Sunday will be a bonafide gameplay reveal. "You're going to see the actual game working and functioning", said Emmert. "This isn't renders. This isn't concept art. Everything that people will see on Sunday is going to be taken right from 'Star Trek Online' as it stands today, so hardened people should know that a release date might be closer than they think".

If you don't want to read the whole thing, here are the high points:

Star Trek Online Debut Webcast This Sunday

Posted by Mike Fahey at 4:00 AM on August 9, 2008

The big gameplay reveal of Cryptic's Star Trek Online is taking place this Sunday in Las Vegas, with a special guest appearance from Spock, who portrays Leonard Nimoy in real life. If you, like me, have spent several hours sitting in the corner curled up in a ball crying because you couldn't be there, dry those tears! The Star Trek Online website has updated today with info on the simultaneous live webcast of the event. It kicks off at 1:30 PM Pacific on Sunday afternoon, so you might want to pencil that stardate down on your...starcalendars?

Sure, it'll be in a small window and you won't be able to physically touch Mr. Spock, but think how much nicer your house smells compared to the event! Come to think of it, if I wanted to smell unwashed Trek fans I just wouldn't shower for a couple days. Bad smells are better when they're yours.

Star Trek Online Officially Announced, First Screenshots

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 9:00 PM on July 28, 2008

That job listing was correct. City of Heroes developer Cryptic Studios is working on a Star Trek MMO, and its got the screenshots to prove it. Dubbed Star Trek Online, the game will be based on the Star Trek franchise. Says Cryptic chief creative officer Jack Emmert:

Star Trek was never about a single character, ship or even planet; Star Trek was always about an entire universe. And MMORPGs are uniquely suited to create such a thing and allow players to explore every inch.

First gameplay footage as well as more details about the game will be unveiled at the annual Star Trek convention in Las Vegas on Sunday, August 10th. Those unable to attend can check out the live webcast at the game's homepage.

More Signs Point To Cryptic As Star Trek Online Developer

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 12:20 PM on March 15, 2008

One would think that Star Trek and massively multiplayer online gaming are the chocolate and peanut butter of a nerdy good time. Whatever the outcome, it seems like money in the bank, regardless of the dominance of World of Warcraft. Still, it's been a rough go, with Star Trek Online festering at Perpetual until that developer gave up the ghost.

City of Hereos Devs Rumoured To Take Over Star Trek Online

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 2:05 PM on January 16, 2008

star_trek_online_cryptic.jpgThe troubled development history of Star Trek Online may have gotten a shot in the arm, now that the MMO is rumoured to be in development at Cryptic Studios. While rumored cancellation of Marvel Universe Online isn't exactly the best (still unconfirmed) news for the developer, having someone work on Star Trek Online is better than no one. w00t Studios says it has anonymous sources pointing to the new home of STO, who recently sold off rights to City of Heroes to owner NCsoft, who in turn created a new subsidiary with Cryptic staffers at its core. Frankly, I'm starting the whole swirling of intellectual properties and people a bit dizzying. Someone replicate me a hypospray.

RED ALERT! CAPTAIN EMMERT TO THE BRIDGE! [w00tStudios - thanks, Mike!]
