Star Wars: Battlefront III was once a game well and truly in development, at UK studio Free Radical. Since its 2008 cancellation, it has been supposedly off and on more times than anyone can count. Like many studios, Free Radical had its fair share of ups and downs, hits and misses over the years. But despite the mixed successes of their earlier games, it was one particular brush with the dark side of Star Wars that finally pushed them over the edge.
It was over three years ago that we got our first look at the Star Wars Battlefront game that never was. Now some more footage has surfaced, and it’s of a much better quality.
These are such things as dreams are made on, the colourful concepts of dying developers, the universes that will never be.
Oh man, oh man, oh man. This has got to be the coolest looking Obi-Wan Kenobi I’ve ever seen.
Remember that amazing footage of Star Wars Battlefront III we caught a glimpse of yesterday in the leaked footage? It looks like we’re never going to be able to play that game.
Looking through that beautiful footage of Star Wars Battlefront III again and again and again this morning, I couldn’t help but notice something:
With Free Radical Design having effectively kicked the bucket, shedding most of its workforce and desperately seeking buyers, here come the leaks. We’ve already seen what Timesplitters 4 might have looked like—how about Battlefront III?
Lots of rumours flying around today concerning Timesplitters developer Free Radical. So one more – this time concerning the future of their “Star Wars project” (ie Battlefront III) – won’t hurt you.
Retailer Amazon has listed tentative dates and platforms for Star Wars Battlefront III, long rumoured to be in development at Free Radical, developers of Haze and Timesplitters. While we’ve been under the impression that the UK based dev was hard at work we didn’t know how hard at work they are. According to Amazon, Battlefront III is coming to everything — Wii, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, DS, PSP, PlayStation 2. OK, not everything, since it doesn’t list a PC version, but if these listings are accurate, anyone and everyone will have access to a version of the game come March 2009. We await more news at E3 next week.
