Stargate Worlds Beta Launches October 15th

12:40AM Mike Fahey | In less than two weeks the Stargate will open, allowing the first group of closed beta testers into the world of the hit Sci-Fi Channel television program. The Stargate Worlds closed beta kicks off on October 15th, and the developers are confident that the game is entering the home stretch. “From now until launch, everything we do is about polish and fun,” said Stargate Worlds Studio Head Dan Elggren. “We’ve laid a great foundation for the beta testers and their feedback is a vital part of the game development process.” More »

Stargate Worlds Beta Signup Lottery For mmolecule Members

1:40AM Kotaku US Edition | Anyone itching to try out Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment’s Stargate Worlds MMORPG could do worse than get themselves over to mmolecule.com. The MMO knowledgebase is holding an exclusive Stargate Worlds Beta Key Giveaway, open to its members. Just sign up with the site (new members aren’t excluded, don’t fret) and then sit back — nervously fingering your James Spader action figure is optional — until September 20th, when 200 names will be drawn from the inverted pseudo-Egyptian headdress and each awarded one Beta signup key. If by some chance you are also a member of a Stargate Worlds Command (a gaming clan, in other words) and host a website in mmolecule’s Guild Services Open Beta (a sort of clan-management service) you will get a second chance to win. mmolecule Launches Stargate Worlds Beta Key Giveaway [mmolecule] More »

Stargate Worlds Combines Running With Shooting

12:40AM Mike Fahey | Here’s the first gameplay trailer for FireSky’s upcoming MMO, Stargate Worlds, based on the hit television series Stargate SG-1. It immediately reminds me of Richard Garriott’s Tabula Rasa, with a bit of Anarchy Online thrown in for good measure. It’s got the sprawling battlefields and action-packed combat of Tabula Rasa with the otherworldliness of Anarchy Online thrown in for good measure. Hell, the characters even look a bit like Tabula Rasa player models. Maybe it’s just a sci-fi MMO thing. In the future, it’s all about running and shooting. More »

Stargate Worlds Beta Signups Begin

12:40AM Mike Fahey | When the Stargate SG-1 based MMORPG Stargate Worlds was first announced from Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment, I had my doubts it would ever even reach the beta stage, yet here we are. The newly-formed publisher FireSky has announced that registrations for the closed beta of Stargate Worlds is now officially open. Hopeful players can head over to their website at www.StargateWorlds.com, register for an account, and have their name thrown into a giant hat from which beta testers will be chosen. They aren’t asking for tech specs, so I can only assume the selection process is to be random, or perhaps by which names they like the best. Testers will be the first to enter the Stargate, and perhaps the first MMO players to utter the phrase, “Draw their fire while I complete this mini-game.” My only question is can I be the James Spader Daniel Jackson, or am I going to be shoehorned into the Michael Shanks portrayal? This sort of thing keeps me up at night. More »

Joe Ybarra on Stargate MMO, Free To Play, Licensing

10:00AM Maggie Greene | It’s hard to fault people for being really ambitious, and Joe Ybarra (producer of games ranging from The Bard’s Tale to the Matrix Online, and now of Stargate Worlds) certainly sounds ambitious. Ybarra talked to Gamasutra about the problems of licensing IP, the MMO industry today, where Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment is headed. First, though, there’s the Stargate MMO to worry about: More »

Stargate Worlds Trailer… Is That It?

10:45AM Logan Booker | Here’s the Stargate Worlds trailer we made some noise about yesterday. I don’t know about you, but I subconsciously cried out the “Lame!” in a high-pitched voice as the clip came to an end. Not only is the trailer pre-rendered 3D, it’s bad pre-rendered 3D. Doing my best to keep high hopes for this MMO based on the Stargate universe, but developer Cheyenne Mountain is going to have to do better to impress us. More »

Stargate Worlds Debut Trailer Airs Tonight

4:00AM Kotaku US Edition | Stargate fans who managed to find some small sliver of something reminiscent of the excellent SG-1 series in Stargate Atlantis (not me) are in for a treat this evening, as the first trailer for the upcoming MMO Stargate Worlds airs tonight with the mid-season premier of said show. Currently in development at Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment, Stargate World promises an evolving galaxy filled with strange and exotic cultures you can shoot at. “Stargate Worlds is about instant adventure in an epic, evolving universe,” said Stargate Worlds studio head Dan Elggren. “That’s what fans and gamers are going to see in this trailer.” After giving you some time to recover from the clip, on January 18th the Unlock The Gate sweepstakes begins, which will feature special codes given out during Atlantis every Friday that give fans a chance to have their name or likeness incorporated into the game. Look for the trailer tonight on SciFi at 10PM Eastern. More »

Stargate Worlds Next Year

2:20AM Mike Fahey | Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment has been industriously tooling away in their secret underground bunker to bring us an MMORPG based off of the hit television show Stargate: SG-1. Originally announced back in January 2006, MMO supersite TenTonHammer reports that the game is now scheduled for a fourth quarter 2008 release. From Kevin Balentine, Cheyenne’s senior marketing manager: “We’ve got a playable version of the game inside of our building. I’m not prepared to release our beta schedule yet, but I can say that we’re going to be releasing the game in the fourth quarter of next year. You can do the math and figure out when our beta program will be.” But math is hard! Tell you what, you guys send us a press release when the beta program info is available, and we’ll go back to geeking out over the possibilities of an MMO with the potential to span an entire universe.
