Dragonball Movie’s Bulma On Gaming, Bunnies

5:20AM Mike Fahey | 22 year-old Emmy Rossum isn’t just the adorable actress picked to play Bulma in the Dragon ball movie. She’s also a bit of a gamer, and a blogger. Ooo, and she loves Wal-Mart! We have so much in common! While I get busy writing Mike+Emmy with little hearts all over my spiral notebook, take a look at an excerpt from her latest blog from the set in Durango, Mexico . I’ve never been much of a video gamer, but I like the adventure games and the shooting games might help my hand/eye coordination for the gun sequences in the film. I picked up a few games not really knowing what I was buying and when I started playing one I realized I had picked up “Stranglehold” starring Chow Yun Fat! Based on the John Woo movie “Hard Boiled,” the graphics are incredible, he jumps, flies and shoots in slow-mo, very John Woo, very cool. I feel a little shy to tell him I’m playing him on a video game, to tell him how cool it is! More »

Stranglehold Commercial Gets Banhammer In UK

5:40AM Mark Wilson | No one ever said John Woo was all butterflies and unicorns, but it’s still surprising that Midway’s recent Stranglehold commercial has been banned for air by the the UK’s Advertising Standards Authority after viewer complaints. The ASA officially states: We considered the ad was likely to be seen as encouraging and condoning violence…The ad must not be broadcast again in its current form. While we haven’t seen the particular ad in question, we’re guessing that POV shots into thug crotches had something to do with the decision. Stranglehold Ad Banned In Britain

10:30PM Luke Plunkett | A commercial for Stranglehold has been banned in the UK following viewer complaints over its content. Why? Seems the voice-over suggests that it’s “honourable to seek revenge and that violence was an acceptable solution to a situation”. It also, according to the country’s Advertising Standards Authority, violates British advertising rules that cover violence and cruelty, as well as health and safety. An ASA spokesman: We considered the ad was likely to be seen as encouraging and condoning violence. Because the issues raised by the ad could not be addressed with a timing restriction, we considered the only solution was to withdraw the ad from transmission completely. And…this couldn’t have been sorted out before it was cleared to go to air? Watchdog puts stranglehold on ad for violent computer game [The Guardian, via Evil Avatar] More »

Along Came An AMD Spider

7:30AM Kotaku US Edition | Back in late December, AMD saw fit to send me one of their new Spider systems, which combines the AMD Phenom Quad-core processor, the new ATI Radeon 3800 series of graphics cards, and AMD’s 790FX chipset to create what AMD considers a complete gaming platform, with the processor, chipset, and graphics all created by AMD and designed specifically to work in conjunction with each other. Over the past several weeks I’ve been putting the system through it’s pace, playing copious amounts of Stranglehold and Crysis – which were provided with the system – along with a selection of my own games, including World of Warcraft, The Witcher, and for some stupid reason, Second Life. Yeah – not a game, I know. What follows is a look at what it is like using this particular system – how it feels to have one at your disposal, and ultimately if it is worth spending upwards of $US 1200+ for a similar system. What you won’t find is benchmarks and technical specifications. If you’re into that sort of thing, you already know where to go and most likely can look at the system specs and guess how the system is going to perform. Speaking of which…

Stranglehold Map Pack Live, Pricey

3:20AM Mike Fahey | Well the Stranglehold map pack announced last month is out on Xbox Live, with the PlayStation 3 version sure to follow shortly thereafter. As promised, it contains 10 new multiplayer maps, 21 new characters, and 10 new achievements for an additional 250 points to your gamerscore. All this for 1200 Microsoft points – $US 15 in real money – and I am currently trying to figure out if it’s worth it. It pretty much works out to $US 1.50 a map, which doesn’t sound like too much, but in one big chunk that costs a quarter of the game’s retail price? I’m going to be struggling with this for days before I finally cave and put the money down. If I know I am going to buy it anyway, why wait you ask? It’s all about the journey my friend. Thanks to Billkwando for the heads up! More »

Midway Planning “Fewer, Bigger, Better” Games In 2008

9:20AM Michael McWhertor | Chicago-based Midway Games hasn’t posted a profit since 1999. This year wasn’t so hot either. That may have something to do with publishing broken, puerile crap like Hour of Victory, Game Party, Aqua Teen Hunger Force Zombie Ninja Pro-Am and Cruis’n. Delays for Stranglehold, Blacksite: Area 51 and Unreal Tournament III aren’t helping matters either, but it may have more to do with Midway’s close association with software diarrhea that could prevent it from returning to glory. Maybe that’s why Midway CEO David Zucker is promising that the company will produce “fewer, bigger, better” titles next year. Fewer Cruis’ns? Yes, please and thank you! More »
