Surfer Girl, I Wish I Could Quit You, 3D Games Edition

Surfer Girl, the gaming world’s most famous entirely unconfirmed tipster, has dropped a few more juicy rumors in her latest update—the biggest bombshells relating to 3D gaming, real 3D gaming.

She claims that Avatar, that’s James Cameron movie game by Ubisoft Montreal, will feature images enhanced by theatre-quality 3D glasses. We’re guessing it’s shutter technology (not the red and blues above), and quite a few companies are still playing with it (I last saw a 3D TV by JVC at CES 07…it was kinda neat). She also adds that a “Japanese company” is making a similar 3D “incarnation of a legendary racing franchise.”

If the rumors are true, Ubisoft is making a huge gamble. Video and video-enhancing eyewear has been around for a long time and never taken off. But that doesn’t mean it’s out for the count. December twenty-sixth things. [via gonintendo]

Surfer Girl Speaks Again: Blizzard MMO and EA’s Karma

Surfer Girl—the rogue rumour writer who still hasn’t really been proven reliable or full of crap—has put up another interesting post. First, if you read between the lines a bit, she claims that Diablo is the new Blizzard MMO. What is this new Blizzard MMO? Demons, the Blizz don’t do new IP.

OK, that’s not exactly Earth-shattering speculation, but it’s interesting possible confirmation of what many of us already suspect.

Next, she makes a pretty interesting counterpoint to those who call EA evil all the time. What do you think of EA? Industry leader committed to quality, innovation and originality. No other company would have let Will Wright make Spore and definitely no one else would give Will tens of millions of dollars to develop a game about evolution with complete creative freedom. No one else would spend tens of millions on marketing on said title. Et cetera.

Well, at least we know she works for EA PR now. We kid. (But when we learn that she works for EA PR, make sure to remember that we mentioned it and totally weren’t joking about it.)

The Forgotten Awesomeness Of Road To Sunday

So, there’s this mysterious personage called “Surfer Girl”, who purports to be a gaming insider – Kotaku has previously run her tips on Prince Of Persia 4 and other games, and if she’s not privy to inside information, she’s certainly great at piecing together info.

In any case, she has two blogs, and the second, “Such Things That Never Was”, deals with games that never came out. Her latest post discusses the somewhat forgotten ‘Road To Sunday’ non-licensed football games planned by Sony back in 2005, and boy, this was crazier than I recalled – sadly, both games were cancelled:

Road to Sunday was the football/fighting cross where a football owner, his partner, and his team have to the owner’s father’s debt to a Jamaican kingpin, and that debt is now his because the father was killed in a mysterious explosion. You brawled in the Santa Monica Pier, Griffith Observatory, a game show set, tunnels under the White House, outside the Mann’s Grauman Chinese Theatre, Sepulveda Dam, the Alamo, Los Angeles River, The Encounter Restaurant, subway tunnels, yacht floors, and a surf shop.

Joust 3D Cancelled, And Other “Secrets”

Ahh, Sufer Girl. We don’t know who you are, but we’re really hoping you aren’t a guy and that these mental images crossing you with Cameron Diaz (from back when she was hot) with a future, desperate, heroin-strung version of Scarlett Johansson aren’t for naught. Now you tell us that Midway had planned to make 3D versions of all their classic games in the early 2000′s, and that this Joust screen is proof of the project’s cancellation. Then you listed 17 other games, many confirmed since by Google searches, that existed, were canceled and no one knew the wiser… until you swam to shore. We’ll put that list after the jump while we try not to cry again over Deus Ex 3.
