At the LAN of Thrones you pwn or you die (and then respawn). The best gear. The right attitude, a whole day of preparation. This was our battle. This was the Sydney Gamers League.
Last weekend was a big one for competitive gaming in Australia – we had the World Cyber Games kicking off in Parramatta, and the Sydney Gamers League going through its fifth run since 2009. We managed to get out to the World Cyber Games, but Kotaku regular Zorine Te headed over to the SGL. This is her story!
This weekend marks the third event in the new series of Sydney’s largest gaming competition, which despite increasing in frequency, has enjoyed record prizes and sponsorship. If you fancy your chances, head to Macquarie University this weekend to try your luck in of of the 15 competitions, or check out the world’s first NVIDIA 3D Surround Vision setup.
LAN party enthusiasts will be relieved to hear that after an initial gloomy forecast over the fate of Sydney’s largest LAN event, the Sydney Gamers’ League (SGL) has found a new owner and will reopen its doors to local gamers.

The SGL is holding its Xmas bash at Macquarie University from 9am – 9pm, Sunday, December 14. As well as plenty of Call of Duty 4 and Halo action, EA’s hosting a competition for Red Alert 3, while Atari will also be there showing off Rise of the Argonauts and giving away a few copies of Pro Evo and MGS4.
