While at GDC, I talked to skating legend Tony Hawk about the upcoming re-make of the releases that made him an icon to a generation of gamers. He thinks it’s great but, of course, he would. Me? I found myself surprised at how much I missed the unique style of extreme sports offered by the Tony Hawk Pro Skater games.
The best thing about the first two Tony Hawk games, better than the games themselves, were their soundtracks. They were amazing. If you were hoping some of those standout tracks would be in the upcoming HD re-release, though, don’t get your hopes up.
Having teased such an announcement earlier in the week, at tonight’s Spike VGAs skae legend Tony Hawk made it official: after a short hiatus in 2011, his series will be back in 2012 with Tony Hawk HD.
Activision’s Tony Hawk franchise took its first ever year off in 2011 because it had been run into the ground. Too many games in too many years with not enough new ideas. With the Spike Video Game Awards coming up, it appears that one year off is all Activision felt it could afford.
After taking 2011 off due to poor sales, it sounds like there will another Hawk game. “We’re going to do something probably for next year but I can’t give too much away,” the skater said recently. [Pixelated Geek via GameSpot via VG247]
There will be no skateboarding games, no music games coming from Tony Hawk and Guitar Hero publisher Activision in 2011. That means no DJ Hero 3 to play and no Tony Hawk games to stand on this year. And, oh yeah, no Guitar Hero games.
