Man, finally a Community Review for a game that I’ve actually played! It’s been a while coming…
UFC Undisputed tried to come back too soon. Following a breakout season in 2009, it returned with a good-but-not-great sequel in 2010. Publisher THQ recognised the franchise didn’t deliver enough and shifted it to two-year production cycle. So is UFC Undisputed 3 the game mixed martial arts fans should have gotten last May? Or is it a title that can last them another two years?
Kotaku reader Ruffleberg and I are pretty big UFC/MMA fans, and after watching Alastair Overeem vs Brock Lesnar at UFC 141 we both started wondering about UFC Undisputed 3 and, specifically, the game’s singleplayer mode. The game is so close to release, but we still don’t know much about it — what gives?
I like UFC. I like watching men beat each other up. I can’t help it. I also think the UFC Undisputed series does a great job of representing the sport’s multiple disciplines in an efficient, well rounded way. The fight I’m currently most excited about is Brock Lesner vs Alastair Overeem — a match which pits a world class wrestler against one of the best heavyweight strikers in the world. Now the developers at Yuke’s have created a simulation of the fight — the outcome? It’s almost too close to call…
THQ has already announced its intention of making UFC Undisputed 3 a tournament ready fighter. In this video they show off how that combat system will look. After watching this video, I’m not going to argue with any of these guys.
THQ’s UFC Undisputed series is a rare beast – it’s the kind of game that manages to attract fans to MMA, as opposed to simply catering to existing fans of the sport. The reason for that is simple – it’s a well made, well executed fighting game. From this newly released trailer, it looks like the third game, UFC Undisputed 3, is following in the grand footsteps of its predecessors.
