Users Report PS3 3.0 Firmware Issues With Uncharted, DualShocks

The newest PlayStation 3 firmware, version 3.00, brought with it a handful of nice changes, including dynamic themes, a sparklier XMB and an unfettered view of the clock. But some PS3 owners are reporting fresh problems.

One alleged issue making the rounds is game related, with some users complaining of “freezing” copies of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, with the game reportedly locking up mid-play and requiring a restart of the system. Those reports don’t appear to be widespread, but are popping up at the official PlayStation.com forums.

Another issue, again not widespread but making the rounds at Sony’s official forums, is with the PlayStation 3’s DualShock controller itself. Some customers are reporting that both first and third party gamepads have stopped working, by their estimate as of the most recent firmware update.

While noteworthy, it’s not that uncommon for this sort of thing to pop up every time the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 get a system update. And for the record, some of us at Kotaku have DualShock 3s that appear to be working just fine, thank you.

We reached out to Sony to get comment on the matter this morning, but haven’t heard back yet about the status of these two items.

Amazon Lops Off Fifty From Uncharted’s PS3 Bundle

Sony may not have an official PlayStation 3 price cut on the books, but indications that the console is due to get cheaper this year increase by one more. Amazon has recently cut the price of the priciest PS3 bundle.

Evidence of an impending PlayStation 3 price drop? Not necessarily. But the availability of some PS3 models is on the decline, while incentives to clear out older stock increase. At the very least, its a better deal on a PlayStation 3 bundle that’s due to become a bit less valued, as Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is just a few months out.

Uncharted Movie Incoming

Everyone’s favourite guy in a blue jeans, Nathan Drake, is the latest video game looking set for a big screen version.

Columbia Pictures is working on a movie adaptation of the million-selling-game Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. The flick is being penned by Kyle Ward, who is writing the film version of Kane & Lynch starring Bruce Willis and who has been hired to scribe Hitman 2 for 20th Century Fox.

The Uncharted movie is being produced by Avi Arad, Charles Roven, Ari Arad and Alex Gartner. No word on who is in talks to helm or star in the picture.

Hear that chime? It’s the box art clock. And it just struck box art o’clock. On offer today is the art for the Uncharted PS3 bundle, which will see one of the console’s finest titles stuffed in with a 160GB PS3, a DualShock 3 and a voucher for PSN title PAIN. It’ll be out next month, will cost you $US500, and if you like fun and think you’ll be downloading movies on the PS3, there are plenty worse ways to be introduced to the console.

Sony’s all-about-me blog ThreeSpeech has an interview up with Richard Lemarchand, one of the lead designers at Naughty Dog. Naturally the topic of Uncharted and its trophies came up, but towards the end there’s an intriguing bit on just how much of the PS3’s processing power is utilised by developers at present. Here are the specifics:

“That’s why we think we’re probably only using 30 or 40 per cent of the power of the PS3 right now, and there’s this great, untapped potential. All third-party developers can get the Edge libraries for free and are going to be able to use them in their own ways, to get more and more and more out of the PS3 over the years.”

The original Playstation proved that “old” doesn’t mean “slow”, and the PS2’s done a decent job of carrying the torch. It stands to reason that developers will continue to milk more of everything from the PS3’s hardware, at which point it’ll achieve sentience and destroy us all.

PAL Regions Get Uncharted Trophy Patch

The promised 1.01 patch for Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune has hit the decidedly charted PAL regions of the world, unlocking PlayStation 3 trophy support for one of the console’s greatest titles. The patch, which weighs in at a modest 13 megs, unlocks 47 trophies that coincide with the achievements already built into the game, along with a 48th platinum trophy for unlocking all of the other trophies. Already unlocked all of the game’s achievements? Well start a new game and unlock them again, as they won’t be applied retroactively due to cheating concerns.

Right now the patch is only showing up in PAL territories, though we’re certain a North American release can’t be too far behind. AHA! Err, UPDATE: Now available in the States!

Want the skinny on all of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune’s PlayStation Trophies? All 48 of them? I do. Mostly because I’ll be quite comfortable restarting the game in order to secure them, having not yet beat Naughty Dog’s PlayStation 3 adventure. Arne Meyer at Naughty Dog spills the beans on all the virtual prizes one can secure in the game, just as soon as that patch arrives. Oh, there aren’t details details, more like a high level briefing.

Fortunately, it sounds like some of them are related to shooting people in the face, something I excel at in Uncharted. However, we’ve been hearing rumours that if you can get Nathan Drake’s shirt fully tucked in, it unlocks, like, twenty nude codes. We’re confirming.

Because Sony’s trophy system is only being implemented now, a bunch of games have already been released that don’t make use of the feature. Meaning developers will need to go back and bolt on trophy support in their own time. So when 2.40 becomes available, which games will have them, and which ones won’t? While Sony released a preliminary list of titles that will be the first to implement trophies the other day, they’ve since added one more: our 2007 NQGOTY, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, which “will also receive a patch at some point in the foreseeable future”.

Sony Take “Appropriate Action” Against Uncharted Airgun

Yeah, that Uncharted airgun? Totally not official. And not being official (and trying to make money off the official product) tends to piss folks off. A Sony mouthpiece says this about the King of Swords gun:

The Drake’s Gun is not licensed or in any way sanctioned by SCE and one we certainly do not condone… We are investigating the source of this product and will proceed with the most appropriate action.

Like telling King of Swords to put the newer blond lady sidekick in its ad?
