The 360′s avatars are, all copy-cat jokes aside, surprisingly endearing. Only problem is, some of the wardrobe and body options are a little… limited. That’s something user-generated content could address. So, uh, will it?
It’s try, try again for EA and Steven Spielberg tonight, with the publisher announcing BOOM BLOX Bash Party for the Wii, due sometime this Spring Autumn.
LittleBigPlanet may be the most high-profile and anticipated game launch ever to hinge so much on user-generated content. With that in mind, storage space is sort of a big issue — if the game depends on contributions from users, how much self-made stuff will people be able to upload?
According to Gameplayer, each user will have a limited allotment of server space for their LBP creations. But there’s kind of a neat catch that helps demonstrate that Media Molecule is taking their role as user-generated-content-messiah seriously:
Writes Gameplayer:
Delivering a keynote speech today at the Edinburgh Interactive, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot called for a focus on user-created content in the gaming industry, declaring that the gaming industry needs to “make sure that our consumers are the stars.” He then of course revealed that Ubisoft is working on a top secret next-generation title that features that self-same focus. He went on to state that in order for user created content to work, developers would have to make a shift towards increasing customer support. “If the creator only has an Xbox 360 then we will help him port [content]to another console. Although some users will be happy to see their creation just on one console. The goal is to make sure that users can show their friends that they are capable of creating content and prove it to themselves.”
Addressing the 2007 SIGGRAPH (Special Interest Group for Computer Graphics) conference, EA’s visual and tech officer Glenn Entis has said he believes the future of graphics lies in user-generated content. As graphics advance, he says, sooner or later we’ll hit the point where they become as good as they’ll get – and once they get there there’ll be challenges. Where do you go when you don’t have to worry about increasing the fidelity of graphics, and just have to worry about making things look nice? User-generated content, that’s where.
Do not underestimate people’s desire for self expression and self creativity. Social networking and self content sites like You Tube, MySpace, Facebook are leading the way. This is the rebirth of creativity in the hands of the many.
Man may have a point. I reckon I spent about 10 hours driving a car in Forza 2. And twice as long painting the damn things. Sure, some may say it was a waste of time, but damned if my racing-striped 69 Camaro wasn’t better looking than anything that came bundled with the game.
