Now, that’s not to say this is exciting. I kept waiting for a crescendo event and then realised this emulator probably cannot handle that many characters on the screen. But the common infected are a little too sedate, especially considering 8-bit games are remembered for being muuuuuch harder.

There’s also only one special infected — the Boomer — although the creator Eric Ruth says all of the other special infected will be added in later some point. Ruth promises that all maps and campaigns will be represented too when the game is available for free download on PC on Jan. 4.

This might be played through a Wii/GameCube emulator, not on the console itself. There are a few flaws in the re-creation — how many can you spot? Mario doesn’t go into the subterranean coin chamber, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist, so let’s say that one doesn’t count.

BoingBoing’s Cory Doctorow writes that he stopped by Hacklab yesterday unannounced and asked to see the Super Mario laser cutter. Sure enough, they fired it up and it played. Warning, if you boost your speakers to hear it, the guy says “f—-ing awesomesauce,” at the beginning so it might not be a great idea if you’re somewhere where saying that word would be inappropriate.
I get that this is a family title, and blood or gore would be inappropriate, gratuitous or otherwise. But seriously, the wrathful spirit makes the Nazis line-dance? Really? They got permission for cartoon violence in the rating, can’t it just, I dunno, blast them into several pieces? Maybe a ginormous Lego spirit who comically stomps them flat? Do something funnier than this? Wow. Some payoff.

Bernard, a customer support rep for Activision, proclaimed that if he got more Twitter followers than his colleague, Randolph by Friday, he’d pie Randy in the face. Bernard came up short but carried out the attack anyway. That’s customer service.

Bernard lost by 1400 to 340. I know cowardice when I see it and I point the finger squarely at Randolph, who failed to recognise his insurmountable lead and act pre-emptively.

Obviously the vid is a stab at viral marketing for Activision’s customer support reps on Twitter, but hey, why not. I’ve tried it with other companies (not in video games, though) and my issue was taken care of seriously. And it beats hold music and phone trees.

Give firearms to one pissed-off amphibian and watch roadkill turn into road rage. Oh, so I’m gonna die if I hit the edge of this screen, MFer? Yeah, well, Frogger’s goin’ home, bitch — through the front goddamn door.
