McWhertor told me the other day that when it comes in, I’ll be in charge of the review for Saints Row: The Third. Mkay. I suppose I should familiarise myself with this game by watching this trailer. Let’s see, we’ve got gangs, driving sequences, gunplay, cyber-demons with giant swords and Tank Pong from Combat. Nice of Mike to give me the straightforward assignments.
In the grand tradition of the Classification Board leaking video games before they’ve been officially announced, we’ve just found this: an official classification for Saints Row Money Shot.
Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro (Cronos, Hellboy) isn’t making just one video game, but three. That’s right, a trilogy (uh-oh!). But making video games takes time.
Saints Row has never been about subtlety and the third instalment is no exception. In fact, the amount of wacky action is being pushed past xXx levels. In the newest gameplay video the saints are taken captive aboard a jet. After a few threats, shoots ensue, both in the plane and falling from the sky. You want stupid ridiculous action? Why not fall through a plane just to shoot a few bad guys? Why not indeed.
Most trailers have explosions. Or at least some fire. This Saints Row: The Third trailer has all over the above. Also – human surfing and dance explosions. Which are at least 20 times better than regular explosions.
Saints Row: The Third lead writer Steve Jaros walks us through some of the finer points of the game’s “Power” CGI trailer in this new video.
Pre-order deals for games have never been my bag, but honestly, the video THQ are using to push this offer is worth posting alone. Being perfectly honest – after watching – I still don’t really know what the hell is going on here!
If Grand Theft Auto is a caricature of modern crime and society, Saints Row The Third is… something else.
Volition’s sometimes beautiful, but thoroughly twisted purple fantasy Saints Row: The Third is coming to the PlayStation 3, PC and Xbox 360 later this year. We’ll have gameplay impressions soon. But for now, all we have is a trailer.
