And The First DirectX11 Game Is…

2:30PM Luke Plunkett | DirectX11 hits alongside Windows 7 later this month, and with it will usher in a new generation of pretty, oh so pretty PC games. Yet the first game to support DirectX11 won’t be a shooter. More »

DirectX 11 Won’t Repeat The Windows-Exclusive Sins Of It’s Father

3:00PM Luke Plunkett | When Windows Vista shipped, it shipped alongside DirectX 10. DirectX 10 would only run with Vista. It wouldn’t run with the faster, more stable, more popular Windows XP. This made those running games on XP unhappy. Well, fast forward a few years, and the next release of a Windows OS – Windows 7 – won’t be repeating the same mistake. Microsoft’s Product Marketing Manager Windows, Ben Basaric, has gone on record saying that while Windows 7 will be shipping with DX11 support (which will add features like allowing a graphics processor to process more than just graphics), it will also run on Windows Vista. So no need to go upgrading. Well…unless you’re one of millions still using XP… DirectX 11 confirmed for Windows 7 – Microsoft revised statement [PCGH, via Voodoo Extreme] More »

Alan Wake Returns In Brand New Cinematic Trailer

5:00AM Adam Barenblat | Remedy Entertainment’s “psychological action thriller” Alan Wake may continue to be a no-show at massive gaming events like E3 and Tokyo Game Show, but the new cinematic trailer released today proves that the Xbox 360 and Windows Vista (grrr…) only title is still in the works. Sure, the knees may be sharp, the valleys may be uncanny and the development may be worrisomely bumpy at times, but we’re still excited to see Mr. Wake suffer. Logo’s snazzy too! More »

Work Ceases On Vista Games Under XP Project

2:00PM Logan Booker | If you think back hard enough, Falling Leaf Systems might ring a bell. It was the company of coders (read: one 19-year old kid) working hard to get programs of various operating systems working in other operating systems. For us, Falling Leaf’s project of interest was the “Alky Compatibility Libraries”, designed to permit DirectX 10 “only” games to run on Windows XP. Unfortunately, Falling Leaf has decided to throw in the towel, sink, bath, ferret and source code. According to the latest post on the Alky blog by “CEO” Cody Brocious, he just wasn’t able to get the whole compatibility schmoozle to click. Whether this was due to it simply being impossible or too much for one man, we’ll never know. Or maybe we will. As a parting gift, Falling Leaf has released the source code free, and is available to anyone with the balls to give it another go. Even though it failed at its ultimate objective, Falling Leaf did manage to get the PC versions of Halo 2 and Shadowrun working perfectly on Windows XP, despite their Vista requirement. So some good did come of the affair. It is with great sadness… [Alky Project via LinuxGames] More »

Maybe You Really DO Like Windows Vista

3:10PM Luke Plunkett | It’s not hard picking up on the disregard most of you hold Windows Vista in. It normally pops up three comments into any PC gaming-related post. So Vista-flavoured hatorade addicts will be crushed to hear that according to Bill Gates, as of right now, Microsoft have managed to subject 100 million PCs (well…”licensees”) to it’s new Operating System. That’s a lot. Actually, it’s so many that, according to the law of averages, many of you will be running Vista. Perhaps this information will prompt you to emerge from hiding, quit the self-hate and admit that, deep down, you actually prefer it to XP. Or not. Up to you, really. More »

Got Vista? Got Silverlight? Got a 360, and …

9:30PM Luke Plunkett | Got Vista? Got Silverlight? Got a 360, and friends on your 360 friends list (we know, with each successive question we’ve ruled more and more of you out)? You might want this: it’s a Vista widget that’ll track your 360 friends list from the safety and comfort of your Windows desktop. More »

Vista Update Coming, Whining Expected To Lessen

2:00AM Luke Plunkett | Microsoft have announced that early next year Vista is going to be getting its first serious update since launch. The majority of the fixes involve boring things that we will not discuss here, but some of it relates to PC gaming. A Microsoft rep has told GI: As developers harness the new graphics capabilities in Windows Vista, some changes in how Windows Vista manages video memory have resulted in sporadic issues in graphically taxing games with high-end video cards. In other words, Vista can’t use virtual memory anywhere near as well as XP could, and on new games with fast graphics cards your PC will most likely quit on you. Expect that to be fixed as part of this pack. Until then? Seems there’s an untested “hotpatch” on offer, but if that doesn’t sound tempting we’re all out of fresh luck today, sir.
