6:00AM December 31, 2010 | Michael McWhertor

For a game that’s not even officially out yet, LittleBigPlanet 2 has already impressed us with its game-making capabilities. User ingenuity, as seen in this “Windows LBP” creation, is just as impressive. More »

NES Turned Into Retro Gaming Uberbox

5:30AM August 19, 2008 | Kotaku US Edition

True, this mod could have been done with pretty much any small plastic box, but choosing a Nintendo Entertainment System to house a retro gaming PC is the kind of crowd pleasing coup-de-modding that is difficult to surpass, save by hollowing out a Vectrex or performing electronic taxidermy on an actual anthropomorphic hedgehog.

The beast contains a Windows XP PC loaded with the GameEx emulator front-end and a metric shedload of NES, SNES and N64 games – all of which, I am certain, are fully licenced and were purchased alongside their original packaging.

Work Ceases On Vista Games Under XP Project

If you think back hard enough, Falling Leaf Systems might ring a bell. It was the company of coders (read: one 19-year old kid) working hard to get programs of various operating systems working in other operating systems. For us, Falling Leaf’s project of interest was the “Alky Compatibility Libraries”, designed to permit DirectX 10 “only” games to run on Windows XP.

Unfortunately, Falling Leaf has decided to throw in the towel, sink, bath, ferret and source code. According to the latest post on the Alky blog by “CEO” Cody Brocious, he just wasn’t able to get the whole compatibility schmoozle to click. Whether this was due to it simply being impossible or too much for one man, we’ll never know.

Or maybe we will. As a parting gift, Falling Leaf has released the source code free, and is available to anyone with the balls to give it another go.

Even though it failed at its ultimate objective, Falling Leaf did manage to get the PC versions of Halo 2 and Shadowrun working perfectly on Windows XP, despite their Vista requirement. So some good did come of the affair.

It is with great sadness… [Alky Project via LinuxGames] More »

Developer CCP has addressed the minor snafu that was causing Trinity, the latest update for its MMO EVE Online, to overwrite an important boot file required by Windows XP systems.

Here’s the word from CCP:

Shortly after the deployment of the update, CCP became aware of an issue involving the Premium graphics content download whereby a small percentage of our users may have been affected and now need to make repairs to system files. We immediately set to work to identify the cause and resolve it. A new build is now available and is safe for all users to download and install.

If you’ve already gone and installed the patch, CCP has a page up with instructions on how to rectify the problem.
