Three new race types, twelve new tracks, thirteen new ships, and six new music tracks are coming to WipEout HD next week, when the Fury add-on pack hits the PlayStation Store.
PlayStation Network racer WipEout HD got a slew of new features today, thanks to an update that brought about new features like badges, friend invites, and a ranking overhaul. But it’s also a little buggy.
Releasing tomorrow on the PlayStation Network, the latest update for WipeOut HD brings a new ranking system to online multiplayer games, along with flashy new badges to celebrate your racing prowess.
The release of WipEout HD was a long time a-comin’ and, unfortunately, its launch on the PlayStation Store is not without its problems. PlayStation 3 owners are reporting that their copies of the SCEE developed hoverracer are locking up, with users pointing to larger friend lists as a potential source of the problem. We contacted Sony PR to find out more.
“Following the release of WipEout HD on PLAYSTATION Store yesterday, we’ve been following the reports by some members of the community regarding problems with game freezes,” SCEA reps confirmed. “We’d like to reassure you all that the WipEout team is working hard to resolve this issue as quickly as possible.”
As far as the cause, SCEA tells us that anything we might have read about the source of the issue is, at this point, “rumour and speculation.” It is worth noting though, that some WipEout HD players are noting that they’re having better luck with a leaner friend list. Just sayin’.
Don’t think it was ever confirmed confirmed, but it was strongly suggested that WipeOut HD’s lengthy delay was the result of the game failing epilepsy tests. That suggestion looks pretty likely today, with the news that the game’s going to ship with the mother of all epilepsy warnings at the front. Every time you play the game, you’ll have to scroll through a large warning message that goes above and beyond what you’d normally expect, with the message dealing mostly with the games “flashing or flickering lights or geometric shapes and patterns”. If you’re sensitive to that sort of stuff, be warned.
It’s been a year since we first went hands on with Wipeout HD, the (eventual) PlayStation Network release that acts as a sort of remastered greatest hits comp from the series’ past decade. The SCEE developed racer may have looked pretty sharp the last time we saw it, but it looks light years beyond that now.
So, happy anniversary Wipeout HD! We got you the traditional gift — hands-on impressions!
vvvvrrrooooooooooooooooooooooooooooommmmm flash flash flash fast fast fast omgcannotwait.
As you can tell by the fact you still can’t buy it, WipEout HD has been delayed. Rumours suggest the reason for the hold-up could be epilepsy tests, it could be glitchy online play, it could be anything and everything in between. But what do Sony have to say about the whole thing? They’ve got a very sensible answer: The reason for the delay of WipEout HD on PS3 has been due to the many improvements we have been making and the numerous features we’ve added to the game. These include: 8 reverse tracks, 4 extra ships, 2 alternative HUDS, 2 Player offline split screen and XMB Trophy support. We look forward to sharing WipEout HD with you very soon.
Regarding the speculation about health issues, we can assure you that we take consumer safety very seriously and monitor it very carefully.
That last line doesn’t entirely rule out the epilepsy stuff, but that first paragraph is making the wait sound worth it regardless.
