Yes, we know, the original plan was for World In Conflict: Soviet Assault to be released on PC, 360 and PS3 later this month. But new owners Ubisoft – who took over when previous publishers Sierra went belly-up – have decided that a PC version will have to do, confirming what we already expected with “World of Conflict: Soviet Assault will be released for the PC later this month. A console version of World in Conflict is not planned for release at this time”.

That last line leaves hope for the future, but really, being an RTS on a console from a publisher that already has an RTS series on console, we’d advise against holding your breath.

The French pub has purchased the Swedish dev team and the World In Conflict property, the real-time strategy series Massive was responsible for.

Hopefully, that means World in Conflict: Soviet Assault, the PC expansion pack and PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 console port, will see the light of day. We presume it will ultimately ship, just under its new name: Tom Clancy’s World in Conflict: Soviet Assault. You know, for brand synergy.

Yeah, at this point we’ve managed to replicate some of the effects, but I don’t know what features will make it into the final release. Nearly all of our DX10 features are possible to do on the consoles if you give it enough time and resources, so we’ll keep on working on them and see what happens.

Bit-tech went and asked itself this very question, considering no amount of tarot card reading, crystal ball gazing or deciphering of entrails would provide a reliable answer.

To this end, the hardware review site not only reviewed Vista SP1, but vanilla Vista with hotfixes installed. This way, it could see whether SP1 was just a massive bunch of previously-released hotfixes, or if Microsoft had included some independent performance tweaks. To summarise its findings, there was a noticeable increase in minimum frame rates for Bioshock and Call of Duty 4, though only at extreme graphics settings for the latter. Crysis, World in Conflict, Supreme Commander and Oblivion failed to register increases worth mentioning. Essentially, people without the latest CPUs and GPUs will see the most benefit.

I’m not surprised really. Service packs are all about convenience (especially for IT managers) and security, with performance coming in third. If your PC has trouble running Vista now, SP1 isn’t going to change that. Tech lovers should note that SP1 comes with DirectX 10.1, not that there’s hardware to really support it yet. And even if there was, you’ll need games to take advantage of it… if there’s anything to take advantage of.

Sierra/Massive Entertainment’s acclaimed post-Cold War real-time strategy title World in Conflict is spreading from the PC to the Xbox 360 and PS3. Expected to launch fall 2008, these console versions won’t just be a port of the original World in Conflict, instead including extra “new content” planned for both the singleplayer campaign and online multiplayer.

For existing PC players, this new content will come in the form of an add-on. Potential pricing has not been discussed. As for me, I just feel lucky that I’m no longer forced to own a PC to play a lot of games formerly reserved for the platform, even if the authenticity of experience isn’t always duplicated.

MARLOW (14TH FEBRUARY, 2008) – Sierra Entertainment, a division of Vivendi Games, announced today that World in Conflict™ – the groundbreaking action-strategy game that claimed the coveted E3 2007 Game Critics “Best Strategy Game” award and topped many “Best of 2007″ lists – will appear on the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system this autumn.

World in Conflict, originally created by Sierra’s-own Massive Entertainment, is being redesigned for consoles and will also include a host of new content for both the single-player campaign and the game’s award-winning multiplayer mode. The new content will also be made available for personal computer as an add-on to the original World in Conflict game. More information on the PC release will be provided soon.

The World in Conflict game for Xbox 360 and the PLAYSTATION®3 system is being developed by Massive Entertainment in conjunction with Sierra’s-own Swordfish Studios.

“World in Conflict was one of the best games on any platform in 2007 and its innovative action-focused gameplay makes it a perfect fit for the transition to consoles,” said Martin Tremblay, president of worldwide studios, Sierra Entertainment. “World in Conflict is being reinvented for Xbox 360 and the PLAYSTATION®3 system, with innovative features and new single player and multiplayer content created for the console audience.
