Why Sony’s New Handheld Has A New Way Of Interacting With You

5:00PM February 16, 2011 | Luke Plunkett

As we saw when the product was first unveiled, Sony’s upcoming NGP won’t be using the company’s trademark “XMB” user interface. It’ll be using something new. Why is that, Sony? More »

PS3 firmware 3.10, announced last night by Sony, does not appear to bring oft-requested cross-game to the console that only does everything. But according to comments from the European version of the PlayStation.blog, it’s too early to give up hope. More »

Sony Love The XMB Just The Way It Is

While Microsoft have seen fit to completely overhaul their console’s front end, Sony say that they’ll be nothing of the sort with the PS3. At least, not anytime soon. More »

2.40′s In-Game XMB Walkthrough

5:30PM June 30, 2008 | Luke Plunkett

Here’s Sony’s Eric Lempel. Eric’s taking us through Sony’s 2.40 firmware update for the PS3, and in particular, how the much-requested in-game XMB is going to work. Pleased? You’re no doubt the sensible type, who knew not to expect too much. Disappointed? You’ve got nobody to blame but yourself (specifically, your unrealistic expectations).

PSP Firmware Update Adds Much Needed Googling

9:40AM June 17, 2008 | Michael McWhertor

Firmware version 4.00 is due “soon” for the PSP, according to PlayStation Network Operations director Eric Lempell—typically “soon” means within the next few hours in these terms—and while it may not make the handheld a flying breakfast car, it’s respectable. The newest update adds Google searches directly from the PSP’s XMB, giving gamers on the go another avenue for cheating during pub quizzes.

Far less exciting than that feature is the option to speed up or slow down video playback via Memory Stick. Yup. Things will be slower or faster, depending on which direction one presses on the D-pad. Hey, remember that Google thing from earlier? Wasn’t that awesome?

Report: In-Game XMB for PS3 is OTW

5:00AM June 1, 2008 | Owen Good

Gaming Age yesterday posted a report that in-game Xross Media Bar support will in fact be a part of the Playstation 3 Firmware Update 2.40, which will release “sometime in June.”

Reader hukeedonfonics also tipped us to the above video, which shows in-game XMB over the BioShock title screen. Comments claim a BioShock developer leaked it.

Gaming Age writes that requested features like a universal friends list, and in-game messaging will be a part of the drop, in addition to “a few rather nice surprises (*cough*soundtracks*cough*)” (their words, not mine.)

So, spread the word, and we’ll hopefully have more on this as it develops.

PS3 “Trophies” On Their Way?

5:30PM May 15, 2008 | Luke Plunkett

Sony have updated their own PixelJunk Eden website with a fact sheet. Why do we care? Well, for one, it’s PixelJunk, so we care. But we care more about this: listed under “key features” for the game is “Trophy Support”. What the hell are “trophies”? There’s been a rumour doing the rounds this week that they’re a form of achievements for the PS3, small 2D trophy images that are displayed somewhere on the XMB. We’ve heard about PS3 “Trophies” since last year. Imagine we’ll hear more about them this year, too. PixelJunk Eden [Sony, via NeoGAF]

No, Those Aren’t Pics Of In-Game XMB

6:01PM January 16, 2008 | Luke Plunkett

Earlier this week, some pics started floating around the internet of some alleged “screens”, “proving” that Sony had already cracked an in-game XMB and that it’d be appearing in the next firmware update. We didn’t post them because, well, they looked about as fake as a fake shot’s going to look. A shot taken by a drunk and over-sized fonts? Please. So it’s little surprise that Sony have confirmed this with us, saying yes, they are fake (as opposed to “no comment”), and no, nothing like it is planned for the next firmware update.

Sony Hear You, Say They’re Workin’ Hard On In-Game XMB Support

8:11PM December 14, 2007 | Luke Plunkett

Every time a new round of PS3 firmware shows up, more fingers are crossed for in-game XMB support than anything else. So every time a new round of PS3 firmware shows up and it’s not included, folks get sad. Cheer up, kids! Sony know you want it, and they’re working on it, PSN boss Eric Lempel telling Shacknews: We are looking at a number of enhancements related to accessing some of the XMB features during gameplay, including messaging your friends. While there’s no timeline to announce at this point, we’ve heard loud and clear from consumers that in-game XMB access is one of the most requested PS3 enhancements.

There, now doesn’t that make you feel better?

PS3′s Xross Media Bar Invades TVs, Media Servers

11:00AM September 7, 2007 | Brian Crecente

I know Sony announced that the Playstation 3′s Xross Media Bar was going to be invading televisions awhile back now, but this is the first time I’ve seen it in action. While I think the Playstation 3 has a lot going for it, the user interface tops my list as one of the neater things packed into the console.

These pictures showing a Sony receiver with a Xross Media Bar are kinda cool, but what I really liked was the Home Media Service with the XMB. Check out all of those movies after the jump. More »
