First Elder Scrolls Online Details Make It Sound Like Just Another Fantasy MMO

The issue of Game Informer packed with info on the newly-announced Elder Scrolls MMO is already in some people’s hands and, well, if you were hoping for a game that was basically Skyrim only with real people, you’re in for one hell of a disappointment.

ZeniMax Online Snags HeroEngine

Things are warming up over at ZeniMax Online. While we’re still waiting for official news on exactly what the studio is developing, bets are on an Elder Scrolls MMO, after Voodoo Extreme did a bit of domain name digging.

Now, Gamasutra (among other news outlets) are reporting that the developer has licensed Simutronics HeroEngine, an all-in-one MMO package that includes client and server software. This is interesting indeed, considering Bethesda is a stalwart supporter of Gamebryo, having used the first iteration of the tech in Morrowind and a more advanced version for Oblivion. It’s not like Gamebryo has no support for MMOs.

In fact, I have it on good authority that Bethesda’s version of Gamebryo is leagues ahead of what original licenser Emergent has on offer. Maybe ZeniMax just likes the look of HeroEngine. Still, it seems a waste to not use technology that’s already there.

ZeniMax Online, Looking For More

Ever since ZeniMax opened the doors to their online division, I’ve been keeping a close eye on them. I don’t have to keep my eye too close, however, as not much has been happening. Until now.

GameDaily has a story up covering a few recent personnel changes at various companies, including Turbine’s mysterious CEO swap and, interestingly, some action at ZeniMax Online. According to the story, 14-year industry veteran Lucien Parsons will take up the role of Production Director at the company. If you cruise over to ZO’s website, you’ll notice they’re looking to fill a few more positions. Quite a few, actually.

Do you reckon they’re making Elder Scrolls Online? Doesn’t sound too far-fetched to me. Mind you, it looks like ZeniMax Online is a separate business to Bethesda, so who knows? Alternatively, ZeniMax might be preparing themselves to take over the Fallout MMO, if Interplay bungles the job.
