Earlier this year, game website IGN opened its doors to a batch of small, independent developers, giving them an opportunity of a lifetime: to appear on a reality show and potentially embarrass themselves on camera with quickly conceptualised and cringe-worthy game concepts.
Originally, IGN’s Indie Open House project was of a smaller scale, offering complimentary office space, internet access, consulting services and plenty of fine perks that were much more attractive than working out of one’s garage or basement. It sounded great.
Somehow, that mutated into The Next Game Boss, a reality program in which we watch hard-codin’ and hard-drinkin’ indie game developers compete for… well, we’re not quite sure. It seems they’re just competing for competition’s sake.
The debut episode of The Next Game Boss focused on creating a unique a memorable boss monster, with five teams competing. Tipster Allan was helpful enough to collect some of the most unwatchable moments from this contest into a 4 minute digest.
The clear winner in terms of possible embarrassment is Team Runt with its evil creation, Mistress Emasculate, an angry menopausal woman leading a feminist army in control of the European Union. Here’s the description of their game.
“Once nearly all of the men are subdued in labour camps, the world is out of control. Without the help of men, women can’t handle nature and nature begins to over power them. Their biological clocks are ticking, afterall,” the game concept reads. “Women launch nuclear weapons to destroy nature.”
“They do what they’re good at: they overreact,” explains Team Runt, going on to say that the childless, man-hating dominatrix can only be defeated by convincing her to love men again. It’s a most impressively awkward presentation, captured for your viewing displeasure.
