The Week In Games

Sega’s releasing a great compilation of Mega Drive games this week for 360 and PS3. Don’t be put off by the hideous screenshot above; for baffling reasons, the only images available on Sega’s press site depict the games in the “updated” HD graphics mode. And they look hideous – a mess of blurred pixels. Thankfully, all the games can still be played in their original resolution. Maybe someone should tell Sega’s marketing department that that’s how we actually want to play them.
Oh, and there’s a couple of things called Halo Zone and Kill Wars, or something, coming this week, too.

Feb 26

50 Cent: Blood on the Sand (360,PS3)
What Is It? Third-person shooter in the Middle East with a hip hop soundtrack.
Should You Care? If you dig the idea of a game that is to Gears of War what Saints Row is to GTA.

Bomberman Land 2 (DS)
What Is It? Yet another step for Bomberman down the mini-game road.
Should You Care? Not if you’ve ever played a Bomberman game before.

Dead Rising: Chop Til You Drop (Wii)
What Is It? A reimagining for Wii of the very tongue-in-cheek 360 survival horror game.
Should You Care? I haven’t played it yet, but my advice would be to approach with caution.

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon (DS)
What Is It? Veteran strategy RPG sees its first ever outing on DS.
Should You Care? Add this to the list of really cool RPGs hitting the DS in recent weeks.

Halo Wars (360)
What Is It? Ensemble’s last ever game takes the Master Chief-less Halo into real-time strategy territory.
Should You Care? If you want a super-accessible and cinematic strategy experience.

Imagine: Ballet Dancer/Movie Star (DS)
What Is It? Didn’t we cover these last week? No?
Should You Care? No.

Killzone 2 (PS3)
What Is It? The most perfect game ever or just another FPS, depending on who you talk to.
Should You Care? If you like big, dumb action blockbusters and you play them online.

Lost In Blue 3 (DS)
What Is It? A curious game of survival on a desert island.
Should You Care? Only if you like the quirkier side of Japanese game development.

My Petshop (DS)
What Is It? I think the title sums it up.
Should You Care? If your girlfriend always stops at the pet store to look at the puppies, she’ll probably like this.

Pikmin (Wii)
What Is It? Wii-make of the Gamecube strategy-puzzle game, utilising the Wiimote pointer control setup.
Should You Care? Probably not worth picking up if you’ve already played the original, but a definite must-buy for everyone else.

Scrabble 2009 (DS)
What Is It? The 2009th game in the long-running Scrabble franchise.
Should You Care? Or something like that.

Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection (360,PS3)
What Is It? 40+ of the better and more high profile games from Sega’s 16-bit console.
Should You Care? Retro fans will find plenty of value for money amid a few shattered memories.

Tom Clancy’s EndWar (PC)
What Is It? PC port of the talkie-RTS released on 360 and PS3 last year.
Should You Care? I’d wait for Empire: Total War later in March for your RTS fix.
