Shadow of the Colossus Getting Big Screen Adaptation, All Hope Lost

Sony's brilliant PlayStation 2 game Shadow of the Colossus is becoming grist for the Hollywood blockbuster mill, in what appears to not, unfortunately, be a horrible, horrible joke. Might want to pour a stiff drink.

According to the Hollywood Reporter's Risky Biz Blog, Sony Pictures will be tackling Shadow of the Colossus for a movie adaptation with producer Kevin Misher, responsible for films such as The Scorpion King and The Interpreter, as well as the upcoming fighting movie Fighting. Now here's where it gets... rough. Got that drink yet?

The screenplay for the Shadow of the Colossus feature is reported to be penned by Justin Marks. He's the same man responsible for the not-so-great Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, if that rings any bells.

The 2005 game, which focuses on the adventures of Wander and his horse Agro, was minimal on dialogue, so a filmed version would be... interesting.

No planned release date for the film, but hopefully we'll all be dead from a nuclear holocaust or black plague by that point.

I think this is it. This is what pushes me over the final line for hope of humanity, and become a mass murdering psychopath.

Seriously though, this is a sad, sad day.

Man, I always wanted to write a script for a SOTC movie, if only to see how well my idea for it would work. Story wise, I would keep the cutscenes exactly the same and add a bit of backstory to Wander and Mono through flashbacks throughout his journey (ie. how she died, what was their relationship, how he got the sword and ran away etc). Would have to cut down on colossi seeing as how you couldn’t really fit them all into a movie, and compressing them into a montage just wouldn’t do them justice (plus I hated that big water one that shoots at you from its slug eyes…). Would have almost no dialogue throughout the journey and add details like wander making items from stuff he finds, and camping out, etc. Not sure how I would tackle the tentacles though, the get kinda repetitive… oh yeah and it would all be CG.
Anyways this news has inspired me to work on this, and I would bet that itll be better than Mr Legend of Chun Li can bastardise. Also, if anyone knows how to… acquire assets such as models and such from the game could they let me know as I would also like to animate something as a test.

    please no!
    break out the vodka...
