EA Let The Man Come To Muhammad In Fight Night 4

new_mundine01_jen-resizedWhile North Americans get to see the unlikely sight of Muhammad Ali sparring with Mike Tyson on the front of EA’s Fight Night Round 4, Australians will be witnessing something even more improbable.

Yep, it’s former Rugby League player Anthony Mundine.

I can understand that EA will be able to utilise “The Man” in their local marketing campaign better than they could either of the US cover stars, but is he really more of a recognisable face than Tyson?

Full PR below the box art:

Sydney, Australia. – Wednesday, May 20, 2009 – Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:ERTS) announced today that “The Man”, Anthony Mundine, and “The Greatest of All Time”, Muhammad Ali will share the Xbox 360 cover of one of the most anticipated games of 2009, Fight Night Round 4. Fight Night Round 4 is being developed under the EA SPORTS™ brand by EA Canada in Vancouver, B.C and will be available in Australian retail stores on July 2nd, 2009.

Anthony Mundine, arguably one of Australia’s best boxers, is renowned for both his confidence in and outside the ring as he takes on all challengers with his signature combination of speed and power. Muhammad Ali, the most celebrated boxer of all time, was famous for his quick tongue and his even quicker hands that wore down his opponents fight after fight. Ali was the first fighter in history to win the undisputed heavyweight championship three times, and is highly revered for his contribution to the sport of boxing. Now see these two boxing juggernauts stand side by side in Fight Night Round 4.

“I’m proud to be on the cover of Fight Night Round 4 with Ali. He’s always been an inspiration that I looked up to both inside and outside the ring” said Mundine. “Now in Fight Night Round 4, everyone can see how good I really am against fighters like Ali, Tyson, Sugar Ray and all the other champions of boxing.”

The addition of Anthony Mundine to Fight Night Round 4 is sure to excite fight fans as they finally get their chance to step into the ring and take on “The Man”, or fight as him and challenge any of the other all time greats in the game. Promising to revolutionize the fighting genre, Fight Night Round 4 features an all new physics based gameplay engine that brings the most authentic interpretation of the sweet science to the videogame world. The action inside the ring will be faster than ever, delivering a true representation of the sport’s incredible speed, accuracy, timing, and power. Fight Night Round 4 allows you to create dozens of legendary match ups, including Tyson vs. Ali, with unprecedented realism.

  • That’s a really sad bit of localisation. Maybe they should put a kangaroo on the front with Ali so we all ‘get it’ down under.
Pass me my bushman’s hat with corks hanging off the brim…

  • I was actually kinda excited about this, but the cover art really puts me off now. It’s such a stupid thing to care about, but Mundine in my eyes doesn’t deserve to be up there with Ali. If they’d actually fought a decent match, sure. But really, I think putting Mundine on the cover is more likely to turn punters off purchasing the game, rather than drawing them to it.

On the other hand, I like the idea of being able to beat the crap out of him, so I guess it’s not a total loss.

  • Why didnt they put someone cool on the cover like Danny Green? If he doesnt make it into the game and Mundine does i’m gonna be soooo pissed.

  • Wow was all for getting this game till now. Sure Mundine might be a good boxer but he doesn’t really stack up next to Ali in terms of what he has achieved in Boxing. Very sad. And his quote: “Now in Fight Night Round 4, everyone can see how good I really am against fighters like Ali, Tyson, Sugar Ray and all the other champions of boxing.” Give me a break!….. You’re not.

  • The game was already a must own, now it’s a collectors item. The Man may have said ‘a few’ misunderstood comments but here are a few from that ear eating convicted rapist who does not deserve to be on the cover:
“Another thing that freaks me out is time. Time is like a book. You have a beginning, a middle and an end. It’s just a cycle.”
“I don’t understand why people would want to get rid of pigeons. They don’t bother no one.”
“I just want to conquer people and their souls.”
“I just want to be humble at all times.”
“I want to rip out his heart and feed it to Lennox Lewis. I want to kill people. I want to rip their stomachs out and eat their children.”
“I try to catch them right on the tip of his nose, because I try to punch the bone into the brain.”
    and finally
    “I’m just happy I’m not a phony.”

  • Maybe if they put Mundine with Pavlik but If they were going to use Ali they should have probably used another All time great. But seriously, are you not going to buy the game just because it has Anthony Mundine on the cover?

  • I won’t be purchasing this game even though it’s a must-have, just because Mundine is on the cover. Wanker he is, he fights has-beens and pads his stats. This just saved me $100. I’ll get it by other means.

  • Good thing I’ll be visiting home (canada) when this is released and will be picking up the north american edition, who the hell is this bum mindine anyway?

  • Mundine certainly shouldn’t be on the cover (what about Kostya?!?) but to all those people who are saying they won’t get the game because of that – grow up.

    • Kato,

You can import the game (Region Free) much cheaper than any store here will sell it and besides it will feature a real boxing great (Tyson) on it instead of that other tosser Mundine.

or you can torrent it and get no box art at all! 😉

  • That just ruined the game for me. Bring back Tyson! Fight Night is all about “the greats of boxing” – and the last time I checked Mundine is not one of those.
