The Smartest PlayStation Executive Quote I've Seen In A Long Time

You can usually count on a PlayStation 3 to be a dependable, professional piece of hardware. PlayStation executives... less so. They like to shoot their mouths off from time to time. But this quote from Kaz Hirai stopped me dead in my tracks.

A console always needs a solid core of games that appeal to gamers... If you go mainstream too quickly and don't support the core gaming audience then you lack the pillar to support your platform. Without this pillar you end up with a fickle audience that might be big but will probably move on.

Why? Because I agree 100% with the man. It's been my biggest fear/concern for Nintendo for a while now that when the wind changes - and one day, it will - they'll be left without that "pillar", and fall flat on their faces.

People often make fun of Sony for going on and on about a "ten year lifespan" for the PS3, but the tale of the tortoise and the hare has been told and re-told for a reason.

I don't care about the 10 year lifespan, I care about the AU$650+ price tag. I love gaming, I love consoles, but there just isn't an incentive for me to pay the PS3's price over something else when I go to get a console in a few months. FFXIII was close, but now it's on both too.

Hey, take into account the benefits of the AU$650 pricetag. You don't need to pay for online. PSN is almost as good as XBL and it's free. You don't need to buy a wireless receiver, the console is better off hardware-wise and will last you longer. You get the damn awesome lineup of 2009: Uncharted 2 is just one of the 35 exclusives this year. FFXIV is coming to PS3 exclusively anyway, so you may as well get a PS3 for both FF13 and 14.

damn right .... Nintendo need to wake up ... sure they are making money now (ALOT), but in the long run, when all the gimmicks are over (i'm looking at you vitality-o-meter thingy) .. its gonna be the tortoise thats gonna take the race.

But then again, people are morons and will continue to buy the CRAP nintendo keeps making.

I couldn't agree with you more. You can pick up a 60gb 360 for around $350 if you shop around. What's the point in paying an extra $300 just to play a handful of exclusives, which are all flash and no substance (Killzone 2 for example). Argue about Blu-Ray all you want, 360 is going to have 1080p streaming downloads by the end of the year.

So, what you're saying is you don't want to spend an extra $200-$300 on top of a Wii or Xbox 360 for a console that's going to be supported for a total of 10 years? Even if you bought it for $700 now - two years after release - that's less than $100 a year worth of value, not to mention all the other features that others have spoken of.
I'll still be playing my PS3 in 8 years while my Wii continues to gather dust and my Xbox 360 has long since succumbed to Red Rings.
      PS3 is an long-term investment.

i am pretty sure in 8 years time your main console gaming will not be on a PS3. that is a load of crap. you PS3 owners are a big joke, why do you need to defend your console so badly, is it so you feel good inside??? brand loyalty is all an illusion for simple minded people who get brainwashed by marketing and image. Sony's marketing department have done their job very well.

all 3 companies are bullies who will do anything to sell their hardware and ultimately their software. Playstation created a brand image that appeals to certain people, and MS have created another that appeals to others. that is it.

        grow up

i am not going to defend the price of the PS3, what i will say is after purchasing one, something i did not want to do as i already had an xbox, i have found it to be value for money.

basically you get what you pay for, the xbox is cheaper but they use that low entry price to gouge for extras, $150 for wifi or $85 a year for a gold live account so i can play multiplayer online. the PS3 just bundles these with the core unit. so depending on your situation price may not be so different.

bluray makes it worth the price tag imo, it just makes everything so nice looking, watch one of your favourite movies on bluray then tell me if it still is not worth the price tag, i doubt you will though

One view of Black hawk down on blu-ray turned me into a Sony fanboy right away. Glad I bought one and from what I've played on the Uncharted 2 BETA, it looks like PS3 is getting the game of the year (No bullshit).

It's worth the money. The awesome games (with the best graphics), a one of the better (maybe one of the best) Bluray players on the market, free online services and gaming (I'd rather have PSN than paying $100/year + DLC/downloadable game costs), connectivity with PSP, etc.

What are you complaining about anyways? I got my PS3 on launch day for $1000!

The whole price point thing is just stupid, it's an excuse now. If your a gamer, like great games, have a high definition monitor/tv (or planning to) and love films, then the ps3 has no equal, it seriously doesnt. In price, content, everything. The 360 is great, if your 15 and cant pay for a console urself, but in the end, ur parents are forking fuckloads in the end anyway.

You get what you pay for and the PS3 is definitely worth it.

    Xbox360: $450
    Wireless network adapter: $150
1 years xbox gold subscription: $85

    Total Price:$685

PS3 Bundle (which comes free internet and a wireless card): $680

    STOP BITCHING ABOUT PRICE

It works out exactly the same if you require wireless and want the internet.

hah, after a while you learn not to care anymore

Factis I spent the $700 odd on my PS3 a couple of years back and I've used it basically everday for a variety of purposes.

It's very good as a quick and easy media player to your tv (especially if said media player is running "PS3 Media Server" (also compatible with 360).

Well worth the purchase in my eyes.
