The Week In Games

The Week In Games

It’s not often that you’d find a golf game being the week’s most notable release.

But, thanks to Wii MotionPlus, the new Tiger Woods game is our pick of the week. All reports indicate that it’s by far the most compelling use of the new Wii accessory… at least until Wii Sports Resort touches down.

For those with an aversion to sport, I’d recommend Overlord II or Overlord: Dark Legend, depending on which consoles you own. While RPG fans will be pleased to see Tales of Vesperia finally find its way onto Australian store shelves, nearly a year after it launched in the US.

New releases for the w/c June 29:

Battle Fantasia (360, PS3) What Is It? Sexy fighting game from the makers of Guilty Gear and now finally seeing a local release after endless delays. Should You Care? A solid choice while waiting for King of Fighters XII.

Buffy (DS) What Is It? Buffy the Vampire Slayer. On the DS. Intriguing! Should You Care? Screenshots suggest a 3D action/adventure/brawler scenario, but I honestly have no idea if it’s any good.

Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood (360, PS3, PC) What Is It? Follow-up to the quirky but enjoyable Wild West shooter. Should You Care? Western fans have few alternatives until Red Dead Redemption rides into town.

Dora the Explorer: Dora Saves the Snow Princess (PS2, Wii, DS) What Is It? “Over 12 unique Wii Remote motions including: ringing a crystal bell, digging with a shovel and raising a flag on a pole!” Should You Care? “Kid-tested approval by children and mums for age-appropriateness, fun-factor and quality!”

Fallout 3: Game Add-On Pack (360, PC) What Is It? DLC episodes Operation Anchorage and The Pitt now available on a disc. Should You Care? The weakest of the four episodes thus far, but Fallout fans will want the complete set.

Fight Night Round 4 (360, PS3) What Is It? Super polished boxing game that continues to improve with each iteration. Should You Care? Mundine fans will love it.

Ghostbusters (PS2) What Is It? The game of the movie arrives on PS2 in surprisingly decent fashion. Should You Care? Obviously get the PS3 version if you can, but this is still worth a look.

Go, Diego, Go! Great Dinosaur Rescue (PS2, Wii, DS) What Is It? “Over 12 exciting Wii Remote motions including: climbing, flapping, pulling and stomping.” Should You Care? “Kid-tested approval by children and mums for age-appropriateness, fun-factor and quality.”

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (360, PS3, PS2, PSP, Wii, DS, PC) What Is It? Text adventure based on the social etiquette at a co-ed school for budding wizards. Should You Care? OK, that’s a lie.

Overlord II (360, PS3, PC) What Is It? Nifty “evil ’em up” that’s part squad-based tactics and part amusing piss-take of the fantasy genre. Should You Care? A must for anyone who enjoys black humour and the occasional fart joke.

Overlord: Dark Legend (Wii) What Is It? More accessible and waggle-friendly version of the above. Should You Care? Not the definitive edition, but a good bet nonetheless.

Overlord: Minions (DS) What Is It? Hey, it’s the handheld version of the above of the above. Should You Care? Easily the weakest of the trio of Overlord games out this week.

Street Fighter IV (PC) What Is It? Street Fighter IV. On PC. Should You Care? As long as you have a good arcade stick or control pad, then yes.

Tales of Vesperia (360) What Is It? Whimsical JRPG that was meant to come out last week, but mysteriously didn’t. Should You Care? Yes! Especially if you dig real-time combat in your JRPGs.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 (360, PS3, PS2, PSP, Wii) What Is It? The 10th in the Tiger Woods series. I kid, I kid. Should You Care? Check the Wii version for the excellent MotionPlus controls.
