Left 4 Dead 2 Might Work With Left 4 Dead 1

Left 4 Dead 2 Might Work With Left 4 Dead 1

The centre of the firestorm over the announcement of Left 4 Dead 2 seems to be that Left 4 Dead 1 players feel they’re being left behind. But what if they’re not?

Speaking with TVG, Valve’s Doug Lombardi has said that the developers are looking into allowing cross-play between owners of both games.

“That’s something that we’re trying to work out the details of right now,” Lombardi said. “So nothing specific to say today, but we understand that it’s a very valid thing to be working on and looking at.”

Wonder how that would work. Maybe it’s only for PC players? Owners of both games see the same server list, but can only join maps from a game they’ve got installed? Or the maps for the version you don’t own can be made available as DLC?

Valve “Trying To Work Out” Cross-Game Play Between L4D1 & 2 [TVG]

  • they should just include the L4D maps in L4D2 so you can play on the same maps together even if you have different versions of the game.

Not sure if that can be done but it would be cool if it could.

    • Most definitely can be done. But it’s not what the fanboys want.
They want what the article states, a sort of server combined list.

I seriously do not get why they are petitioning #2.
Just to get DLC, extra weapons, maps & characters.

It’s kinda funny. They all think, but they’re selling out by bringing a sequel within 12 months, the new content isn’t worthy for a new game.

Last i heard, Valve were on par with Nintendo for selling out.

      Either way – i want Left 4 Dead 2. =)

  • I think this will probably work like the Booster Packs for Battlefield 2; you can have a server that runs both original and booster pack maps, but when the server changes to a booster pack level, all players that don’t have that content installed get kicked. Of course, with Left 4 Dead’s campaign structure, this wouldn’t happen during a campaign, though with public L4D games people tend to leave the server after a campaign rather than voting on a new one anyway.
Still, it would help to prevent fragmentation of the available servers as all the servers that are available to host L4D2 games would also be in the pool of available L4D1 games, and seeing as the server software is free, most server hosts would probably upgrade to the L4D2 server.

  • No Valve should just do nothing, serious I’m sick of the L4D community, everyone is just a bunch of whiners. Don’t like it don’t buy it.

  • I think whats being suggested here goes beyond a combined server list..

I think hes talking about a combined front end… you launch one game to access the content from both..
