Microsoft Handheld A Matter Of “When”

Microsoft Handheld A Matter Of “When”

While there’s always been a lot of chatter surrounding the possibility of Microsoft entering the handheld gaming space, Microsoft themselves have always been rather evasive on the subject. Which is why these comments from Shane Kim are so surprising.

In an interview with Kikizo, the Microsoft man opens up a little, saying "For us, it's a matter of focusing on 'when', because if we chased after a mobile or handheld opportunity, we would not have the resources and ability to do things like... Project Natal. So we've chosen to focus on the living room experience from a hardware standpoint, if you will, but we're building a service in Live that will... will extend to other platforms. No question about it."

It's an optimistic, if carefully-worded statement, which sounds to us like it could have a lot more to do with bringing Xbox Live to advanced models of Microsoft's Zune portable media device than crafting a dedicated gaming handheld.

Exclusive: Portable Xbox Gaming a Matter of "When" [Kikizo]

  • This kinda sounds like eventually they will, and eventually they probably will. But eventually…

People have always expected MS to bring one out the moment the PSP arrived. Just cause SONY have done it, doesn’t mean MS -should or will. They most likely will, but everyone keeps saying as if they should and are doing it RIGHT NOW. I mean, judging by handheld sales, they aren’t going anywhere.

The 360 is finally in a place where everyone knows what it is, people can identify it with Microsoft and its sales are very strong. (Go on fanboys, mention Japan). And MS are on their second console and after over 8 years it took them to get where they are.

With a handheld, no doubt it will be some sort of success. But again in Japan, the 360 has only JUST sold 1 million after nearly 3 years. The original didn’t sell that in its lifespan.
Timing needs to be perfect for when MS launch this so called device they are apparently working on…

    • They’re probably way ahead of you there. If that hasn’t even crossed their minds yet, then maybe they shouldn’t release one.

Is it possible for MS to create a handheld device so that arcade games on XBL don’t need to be ‘ported’ over or re-developed kinda thing to suit the handheld device. That way you can access internet/XBL on the Xbox Portable & just download the same version people do on the 360.

BTW: 2 things about the name ZUNE360
It would be a disaterous name but at the same time, a good choice. Bad because not everyone knows what a ZUNE is, not everyone even has one like majority people do an ipod. A lot of people would question the name & the product before seeing it. If it is portable Xbox then the word Xbox should be in it.

Good idea, because then it promotes the Zune. The iPod Touch (iPhone too) promotes Apples mp3 players. Knowing it has iPod in the name people will run to buy it!

However i know that pic used is just a little example pic.

  • Something that can play arcade games would be nice, problem is, some arcade games obviously wouldn’t be playable, like bf1943 on a handheld.

I’d love to see a portable castle crashers though.
