PlayStation Camera To Support Facial Recognition

Forget full-body waggle, the thing that most excited me about Project Natal's E3 demo was the promise that the camera could recognise my face, and log me into Xbox Live automatically. Yes, I'm that lazy.

Not wanting to be outdone, Sony Europe's Head of Developer Services, Kish Hirani, announced yesterday during the Develop conference that the PlayStation 3 would soon also support this technology, courtesy of the existing PlayStation Eye camera.

This PS Eye will apparently be able to "detect gender and even the age of the face, separate facial features such as the nose, eyes and ears, and even detect whether you're smiling or not." In addition to facial recognition, Hirani says the PS3 will soon also be able to support other similar advances, such as "skeleton tracking".

Whether your favourite upcoming game will support this kind of thing is up to developers.

    That's cool.

A device (seemingly) targeted at core gamers but has all the features of MS' Natal. (conversely MS' campaign seems to be aimnig Natal at more general users. I'd go for the PS3 version

Don't kid yourself, you were never going to be getting many (if any) hardcore games on either platform. The only thing this imitation will do is make it more appealing to produce casual games which support this tech as they can release them multi-platform.

I’m not convinced the Natal or Sony’s Motion controller will be the success either company wants. Say what you like about them but the truth is both Microsoft and Sony are trying to cash in on the Wii’s Success. I think its pointless, Wii owns the entire casual market and dominates the home console market.

These capabilities aren't coming,,, they're already available to devs.

Sorry sony, a bit too late, how long has this camera been out now? I used it one, to play one game, and have not touched it since. This just ins't enough to make me want to try it again.

It's about time they did something with the camera :\
