Sony: We Could've Come Out With PS2.5, But Didn't

There's been a lot made recently about the PS3's price point. Some say it's too expensive, some want a price cut. But for Sony exec Jack Tretton, those folks are not thinking long term.

"We could've come out with a PlayStation 2.5 for $US299 or less, and in the first two or three years it would sell extremely well," he explains. "But there would be a point where people would be going, 'I am not really seeing the incremental leap.'"

For Tretton and Sony, they're "sacrificing the short term to pay dividends in the long term." Not sure how that works for Sony's bottom line, but hey, their company!

"People are having short-term thinking—the platform is not even three years old," Tretton adds. "It was $US599; it's now $US399." He goes on to say that Sony isn't planning to snare all customers in day one, but over a ten year period.

We're just glad that Sony didn't put out a PS2.5 so we have to buy another console. We're not made of money, you know.

So basically, if you buy a PS3 now, you are /still/ an early adopter?

I don't see this strategy working.

So.... Sony's approach is that customers who have waited for a price drop are not thinking long term? BRILLIANT!

How to Win Friends and Influence People, the Sony way.

Here's an idea Sony. I'm going to think long-term, just like you want me to. I'm going to purchase a PS3 in the LONG-TERM, when the price drops a bundle. How's that for long-term thinking Jack?

I am available for board directorships, just call me.

I don't see it, we're more than half-way to the next generation of gaming systems. The only reason PS1/2 hung in for so long is because they were dominant in their generation, PS3 is a long way from there.

    this is complete BS.

Sony didnt expect PS3 to cost so much and because the company is now in the red they cant afford to loss lead as much as they need to.

What's more, they've been caught with their pants down by both the competition. M$ with a similar/better performing machine that cost less, and Nintendo with a low spec machine that is raking in the cash. Sony look foolish and slow.

There's a reason Ken Kuturagi got put out to pasture.
