Survey Says U.S. Gamers Older, Fatter Than Thought

Hooray! Video gamers average age is that of mine - 35. Less celebrated: gamers are more likely to be unhealthier, fatter, and more depressed than others. Those are the findings of - ding ding ding!!! - a new study.

The centres for Disease Control examined 500 adults across all majority ages (18 and up) in Seattle, because its Internet usage is highest in the United States and it's one of the largest media markets. Forty-five percent of respondents reported playing video games. Of them, CDC found that gamers' average age has gone up to a what-am-I-doing-with-my-life 35, and body condition, health and emotional state have followed suit.

All is not lost; girl gamers my age have it worse. CDC found they reported "greater depression and lower health status than female non players." Unsurprisingly, "male gamers reported a higher BMI and a greater reliance on the Internet than non-gamers.

"Health risk factors, specifically a higher BMI and a larger number of poor mental-health days, differentiated adult video game players from non-gamers," he said.

"Video game players also reported lower extraversion, consistent with research on adolescents that linked video-game playing to a sedentary lifestyle and overweight status."

Feel like crap yet? You should, according to this study.

Big surprise all americans are old and fat

All is not lost; girl gamers my age have it worse. CDC found they reported “greater depression and lower health status than female non players.”

Is this like, they're fat because they game or they game because they're fat?

Chicken and the egg shit going on here.

I think it goes both ways a bit. Perhaps they put on a bit of weight because they're into gaming so much and have entered a sedentary lifestyle for the most part, and because of this weight gain, they experience a psychological downturn with depression and self-consciousness, thus they stay indoors and unactive even more because they're shy and uncomfortable with their appearance.

Being in Australia I gotta say all the gamers I know exercise regular, eat pretty healthy and have girlfriends, so I guess the surroundings plays pretty heavily into this. Obviously the company wanted to make a point of how evil video games are and chose the worst state in the world to analyse - can we see the results of a control group please?

Gee, that's a really INDEPTH study that is very accurute. It's obvious that games are somehow linked to depression/obesity.

Not being stupid, there was one study on Kotaku that pointed out roughly 45% Americas are gamers. Also having the highest internet usage, ofcourse there are going to be a lot of gamers.

As well as the fact thay they only studied gamers 18 and up.

Good thing i am an Aussie gamer, ay?

So before some of you get over excited and start asking for phone numbers and nude pix when you hear a girls voice over Live, just remember that there's a large possibility that she's and Orca that cuts herself.

Thats the lesson here right? :D

I am somewhat confused by the statement that the average gamer is 35 when they only surveyed people aged above 18. The BBC link correctly wrote that the average adult gamer was 35 years old, but they compared it to another study which didn't say who their participants were.

Not that it's extremely important in this particular case, but my experience is that a) the media's always slightly wrong, and b) that's especially the case when the media cites scientific studies.

    Fit Aussie gamer reporting in!
