The Week In Games

Strange week this one. There’s one high profile first-person shooter, a bunch of puzzle-based shovelware, and two super geek-out strategy games.

In all honesty, I wouldn’t be buying a new game this week. But if you twisted my arm enough – and it’s still hurting from my table tennis exploits on Friday – I’d probably check out Military History Commander. The DS version actually, more out of curiosity than anything else.

I’d love for Raven to prove my doubts over Wolfenstein wrong though. What are you picking up, if anything?

New releases for the w/c August 17:

International Cricket Captain 2009 (PC)
What Is It? Cricket management game where you do everything except actually bat or bowl.
Should You Care? There is a lovely photo of Phil Hughes on the box.

Jewel Quest 2 (PC)
What Is It? Gem-matching puzzle game. With quests. And now there’s two of it. Apparently.
Should You Care? I think I’ve matched enough gems by now.

Jewel Quest 2 Solitaire (PC)
What Is It? Card-based puzzle game. With quests. And now there’s two of it. Apparently.
Should You Care? Actually, I kinda prefer matching gems.

Jewel Quest Expeditions (DS)
What Is It? Gem-matching puzzle game. With quests. And expeditions. Apparently.
Should You Care? Nah, I’ve probably had my gem-matching fill.

Mah Jong Quest 2 (PC)
What Is It? It’s Mah Jong. With quests. Apparently.
Should You Care? Aren’t there freeware versions of Mah Jong to play?

Mah Jong Quest Expeditions (DS)
What Is It? It’s Mah Jong. With quests. And expeditions. Apparently.
Should You Care? No, seriously, aren’t there freeware versions of Mah Jong to play?

Military History Commander: Europe At War (PC, PSP, DS)
What Is It? Turn-based strategy game that looks surprisingly hardcore for a handheld release, though it’s right at home on PC.
Should You Care? Depends on how you feel about hex maps.

Mystery Stories (DS)
What Is It? Hunt-the-pixel style adventure game has you tapping the screen to gather clues.
Should You Care? If Where’s Wally is more your thing than Professor Layton.

Mysteryville 2 (PC)
What Is It? Another hunt-the-pixel adventure game, only with a mouse instead of a touchscreen.
Should You Care? Buy it for your mum.

Roary The Racing Car (DS)
What Is It? Mini-game collection for kids.
Should You Care? If your five-year-old knows who Roary is.

The Secret Of Margrave Manor (PC)
What Is It? Yet another hunt-the-pixel adventure game, only with a mouse instead of a touchscreen.
Should You Care? Buy it for your mum after she’s finished Mysteryville 2.

Wolfenstein (360, PS3, PC)
What Is It? Nazi, zombie and Nazi-zombie killing first-person shooter.
Should You Care? Don’t expect greatness, but it should be braindead fun.
