   MS Australia loves killing the resale value of 1st party games by packaging everyone single one of them in with a console for free.

   No price drop on the existing Pro stock is disappointing.

   Also was kinda hoping to get an Elite at $399, but $150 off was too much to ask huh?

      Compared to the Killzone 2 bundle packs? Or the LBP pack-in bundles?

      The only reason Sony haven’t packed-in games this time around is because they (rightly) realized that pack-in games don’t sell consoles when the console is 10x the price of a single game.

      Yep, I’m hugely disappointed that they dropped the Pro. The Elite was the machine to drop (I mean, what’s so elite about it, apart from the price?). They should have given the Pro the 120GB drive, and put a 20GB drive in the Arcade.

      Then again, they should go with a chrome finish for the Pro; the same look that developer boxes get, instead of cheap white plastic. Then again, we are talking MS, and they’ve never been known for style or taste or quality.

         They did give the Pro the 120GB drive – that’s all the Elite is. This way they’ve opened a gap for a future “Ultra” with a 320GB drive. They were never going to give the Arcade a drive; they want to keep a low-cost model around for a) low entry barriers and b) the significant number of people who don’t bother to go online and are thus not often likely to need the HDD.

         Also, chrome finish == style/taste ?!?

   As someone who has all 3 consoles, plays more on his 360 than on his PS3, I gotta say: Microsoft have to do much better than this.

   I’ve been banging on about Sony’s pricing for ages. The PS3 WAS grossly overpriced relative to the competition. Features be damned; it’s all about price.

   The new reality: the PS3 Slim is the better value proposition than the Elite. (But not the Arcade.)

   At over $700, I didn’t recommend the 80GB PS3 to anyone. But at $480 or so for the Slim, that’s a bargain.

   And the Elite is not a bargain. Not when you have to add the cost of XBL each year. (And no, PS3 fantards, not everyone needs wireless, thank you very much. Or Blu Ray).

   Microsoft are going to have to do better.

      What is the difference between the launch version and the Elite? Despite the colour change and the bigger hard drive (because it can be bought seperately).

The small launch HDD is driving me nuts since it’s always full but getting the 120GB drive by itself is ludicrously expensive so selling off the old console and getting an Elite could be a cheaper option.

         The launch pro doesn’t have HDMI so the drop in the elite is definitely tempting just to tidy up the cabling situation and some TVs only do 1080p through HDMI.

         The HDDs are ludicrously expensive at $200 a pop (plus hard to find.) I was recently looking at getting one cause my crappy 20gb HDD doesn’t cut it. Now, with the price drop for the Elite, it’s probably worth my while just buying that – seeing as I need another controller and want halo odst – and who knows – there might end up being some retailers out there throwing in an extra game plus selling it for less than RRP?

      This is exactly what I’m looking at doing as well. My younger brother got the Halo edition 360 and is having issues with the drive not reading disks. I have the launch model and haven’t had any issues. I’m looking at upgrading to the Elite (primarily for the HDMI point) and passing my current 360 to my bro to give him a 2nd chance with the console.

      Was going to do it soon but will hold off a lil’ and save myself $100.

   Joystiq are now reporting that there’s a 250GB HDD version of the Elite, complete with two controllers and Forza, on the way.

   Now, if they can do that at AUD$399, that would be alright competition to the Slim.

   Just on the reporting of this story:

   “And if you buy an Elite up until October 20, you will also get a free copy of Halo 3: ODST, effectively pricing the console a further $100 lower.”

   Well, good luck selling ODST anywhere for $100.

    MM kinda disappointed here.

    I usually only see the Elite $549 when with games. I usually see the Elite $499 without games and sometimes even in JB for $499 with that Kung fu Panda & Lego Indiana Jones bundle. And that was an official MS bundle. for $499.

    I was expecting $399 but eh! I’m gonna get that ODST deal then. Still, pre-order my EB Games ODST, get the Sgt Johnson code, get this ODST bundle, take back the EB Games game but use the code within the 7 days and boom! Free copy of ODST.

       It’s not about hardware sales. (Unless you’re Nintendo.) Hardware sales are there to put the on-selling plan in to your living room. That’s why both MS and Sony are willing to cop losses on the production of their hardware.

       XBL & peripherals are the long-term plan. Games, movies, XBL subscription revenue and the purchase of other stuff, is where the real money is at.

       Seen the price of a Dual Shock 3 controller lately? Or the cost of Mass Effect for download?

       THAT’s the real “long term plan”. Consoles are merely the way to get you in to a 10 year subscription plan. They’re the start of the process, not the end.

    Hmm, been meaning to get one for a while but have held back cuz most games for the 360 come out for the PS3/PC as well. But there are still some exclusives I wanna play, this gives me reason to get one now.

    HARVEY NORMAN is selling the XBOX 360 Elite at $429 with both HALO 3 and HALO 3 ODST and a HDMI cable

    As for the Super Elite version (250 GIG HDD), South Africa will be releasing the new version with dual controllers in October.
