Australian Ratings Board Refuses Left 4 Dead 2 (Again!)

After the Australian Classification Review Board first refused to classify Valve's zombie first-person-shooter Left 4 Dead 2, Valve appealed the government's decision.

Valve's Zombie shooter was refused classification, which means it can't be made commercially available in the country. Not quite the same as a banning, but it has the same effect.

As Valve told us earlier, the version of Left 4 Dead 2 rated by the Australian government is "the adjusted version". Valve's Gabe Newell told Kotaku Australia that this edited version, Australia-only version is "fully compliant with the guidelines" for a 15-years-old and up rating.

"We think Left 4 Dead 2 is a lot of fun," Newell said then. "It's a game for adults. But we're aware that different countries have different restrictions, and we want to make the choices that make the game the most fun for that country."

The recent decision reads:

According to the Classification Review Board, the game has been once again refused classification due to violence.

In the Review Board's opinion, Left 4 Dead 2 could not be accommodated within the MA 15+ classification. The computer game contains a level of violence which is high in impact, prolonged, repeated frequently and realistic within the context of the game.

In addition, it was the Review Board's opinion that there was insufficient delineation between the depiction of general zombie figures and the human figures, as opposed to the clearly fictional 'infected' characters. This was a major consideration of the Review Board in determining the impact of this game on minors.

Computer games classified RC cannot be sold, hired, advertised or demonstrated in Australia.

The Classification Review Board convened today in response to an application from the distributor of the computer game, Electronic Arts, to review the decision made by the Classification Board on 15 September 2009 to classify Left 4 Dead 2 RC.

Didn't valve say if the unedited version was refused again they'd just release a patch to convert the edited one back to its original state on release? pretty sure they did.

If that's not the case I'm sure a hacker will do it anyway.

Kinda sucks for people who get the 360 version though.

Eh. Well I guess that stinks.

Australia smells, this really has to be the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

Anyone actually thought of spam emailing this wanker in SA?

Ahh SA the place full of incest beings and bikies.

fuck if this is the case I'm going to knife another innocent old lady

Pray teell how does steam decide what region you are in? Surely you could either change your country setting in steam before purchase and/or proxy to another regionj when purchasing?

Just face it guys, we live in a nanny state where only the government knows what's best for us. Besides, everyone knows games are only for kids, hence the government thought it'd be necessary for Left 4 Dead 2 to be made suitable for them. Therefore, zombies are being replaced with teddy bears, and guns are replaced with an endless supply of hugs.

Ok seriously WHAT THE FUCK is wrong with our country... we can have games like "Saints Row" where your a violent gang member shooting the fuck out of people, Course launguage coming out the arse, pimps , hoes ect.... but when it comes to a game where youu shoot zombies and blood and limbs fly into the air can be banned it just complete bullshit, look at "Left 4 Dead" from what trailers ect... i have seen for number 2 its basicly the same game, apart from the new A.I directors, same graphic changes, new weapons and infected there is not alot of difference... for NZ to get it with an R18+ rating is crap, so can someone please help me understand this countries shit house fucked up fucking raitings system cause i have been looking forward to this game for too long

Not too sure if this would work or not, but if you purchased L4D 2 off the steam website and were able to "obtain" a copy of an overseas unedited version of the game and use that to install it would that not install all of the explicit content that was removed therefore allowing you to play with all the gore??

does anyone know what valve's position is officially
on installing an import copy?-i will shell out for the wiener version if i must, but by god i want the real deal if at all possible.

I am so angry at the state of L4D2 in Australia. It is now a shit game all due to a bunch of finger up the ass Australian bureaucrats. Don’t buy the game in Australia you’ll be so disappointed. Boycott it. There are talks of changing the app id in the steam.inf and steam_appid.txt but this causes invalid account verification and game stops. How did Mad World get through and L4D2 not. Someone’s upset they didn’t get their bribe from the sound of it.
