Brand-X Memory Units Won't Work In Next 360 Update

Unauthorised memory units are verböten under the next dashboard update to Xbox Live, which isn't of mainstream concern right now, but will be to those participating in the Xbox Live Preview Program.

Says Major Nelson, the Xbox Live community guru:

When Preview Program members start receiving the Xbox 360 system update next week, one of the changes is that unauthorised Memory Units will no longer work with the Xbox 360. If you've moved your profile or saved games onto one to "back it up," you'd better move it back onto an authorised Xbox 360 storage device prior to taking the update. If you continue to use an unauthorised Memory Unit after the update, you will not be able to access your stored profile or saved games.

If you're interested in what devices are authorised storage devices, that list is about three names long.

Ahhh Proprietary Ware Syndrome strikes again.

    Can anyone say "Anti-Competitive Behaviour"

The ACCC usually can - just ask Ebay.

So does this include the cheap $70 120GB hard drives that you order off eBay from China?

i hope not - i've got an official 120GB but the replica's encourage more competitive/realistic pricing

I'm putting a report in to the ACCC, this is ridiculous.

It says unauthorised. So I'm guessing anything that is "official" will be fine

Fair enough if these companies don't seek permission to produce these products then MS can do what they want in order to prevent those products from being used on their own system.

But some accessories can be a total rip-off when you buy from MS or even Sony & Nintendo & it sucks!

This could be a game breaker for me... I finally got the money together to buy a 120gb from Ebay (China) a few weeks ago, if i lose all my saves with the update its time to trade my 360 and 100+ games on a PS3... not because i can't afford a legit 120gb but i'm just suffering from M$.....

You can afford 100 games but not a retail 120GB drive?
